QUESTION NO 460
PUBLISHED IN INTERNAL QUESTION PAPER : 20 August 2004
MR D H M GIBSON TO ASK THE MINISTER OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS:
(1) Whether, with reference to her reply to Question
No 41 on 12 August 2004, the taxpayers are required
to cover the costs of any travel undertaken by (a) Mr
Jean-Bertrand Aristide and (b) his (i) family, (ii)
staff and (iii) entourage inside or outside the country;
if not, who funds such travel; if so, why;
(2) whether a record has been kept of the money spent
on the Aristide family, staff and entourage since their
arrival in South Africa; if not, why not; if so, what
has been the total cost to the taxpayer of hosting the
Aristides since the arrival of the Aristide family in
South Africa up to the latest specified date for which
information is available.
N621E
REPLY:
1. Having taken a decision to host President Aristide,
the South African Government has used
resources and facilities already at its disposal. It
is, therefore, not possible to provide an
accurate costing of the money spent on the Aristide
family.
2. Furthermore, President Aristide has not travelled
outside South Africa since arrival, nor has he to date
travelled any significant distance from his area of
residence.
