PUBLISHED IN INTERNAL QUESTION PAPER NO 29 OF 22 OCTOBER 2004

MR DHM GIBSON (DA) TO ASK THE MINISTER OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS:

Whether any cases of corruption relating to misappropriation of state funds and/ or misuse of state resources are currently being investigated by her department; if so, in each specified instance, (a) what is the (i) total number of cases and (ii) nature of the corruption being investigated, (b) when was the investigation launched, and (c) (i) what are the names of the persons being investigated and (ii) what positions do they hold in her department? N1292E

REPLY:

There is currently one case relating to misappropriation of state funds and two cases of misuse of state resources being investigated within the Department. The ranks of the affected officials are a Deputy Director, a Director and an Assistant Director. The case against the Deputy Director involves misappropriation of funds and the investigation was conducted on 13 August 2004. The two cases of misuse of state property involve a service vehicle and an official car by the Director and the Assistant Director. The investigations were launched 27 November 2003 and 13 August 2004 respectively. Since the officials have not been found guilty yet, the sub judice principle should be applied and their names accordingly withheld.
