Mr W J Seremane (DA) to ask the Minister:

1. Whether the Government has taken note of the contents of the report by the United Nations special envoy, Anna Tibaijuka, on the effects of the Zimbabwean government's Operation Murambatsvina; if not, why not; if so,
2. Whether the Government agrees with the findings of the report; if not, why not; if so, what are the relevant details;
3. Whether the Government intends taking any steps to avoid a continuation of Operation Murambatsvina; if not, why not; if so, what steps?

REPLY:

1 The Government is aware of the contents of the UN special envoy's report.

2 The Government is in agreement with the report that some intervention is needed to alleviate the plight of the people who have been critically affected by the evictions, as a result, the Government of South Africa is either directly and/or indirectly involved in a number of relief efforts aimed at supplying food, blankets and tents to people who have been rendered homeless by the demolitions.

3 South Africa cannot dictate to Zimbabwe how it should implement its laws regarding the demolition of illegal dwellings.
