Status on the Talks of the UN Secretary-General, Mr Kofi Annan
with the South African Government regarding a Visit to Zimbabwe NATIONAL

to ask the Minister of Foreign Affairs:
(1) Whether the Secretary-General
of the United Nations, Mr Kofi Annan, has held talks with the Government regarding
a visit that he will be paying to Zimbabwe; if so, (a) for when has such a visit
by Mr Annan been scheduled, (b) what are the related conditions and (c) what will
be the purpose of his visit;
(2) whether the government of Zimbabwe was
involved in these talks; if not,
(3) whether the Government will consider
asking Mr Annan to visit Zimbabwe with a view to making a contribution towards
the solution of the political and economical problems being experienced over there;
if not, why not; if so, what are the relevant details? N652E REPLY: Answer
1.Yes. (a) No visit took place. The discussions between Mr Kofi Annan
and the President of Zimbabwe took place in Banjul. They decided that the visit
was not necessary at that stage. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
