PUBLISHED IN QUESTION PAPER NO 7-2012 of 22 AUGUST 2012

Mrs W S Newhoudt-Druchen (ANC) to ask the Minister of International Relations and Co-operation:

Whether developed countries are following through in their commitments to the drastic reduction of greenhouse gas emissions with sustainable implementation; if not, how was this conclusion reached; if so, what are the relevant details?

Reply

a) All Kyoto Parties except Russia, Japan and Canada, have committed in Durban at COP17/CMP7 to a 2nd Commitment Period of the Kyoto Protocol that will commence on 1 January 2013.

b) All Parties agreed to the Ad Hoc Working Group on the Durban Platform for Enhanced Action (ADP) which will negotiate within set timeframes, i.e. 2015 and 2020 by which a new Protocol, another legal instrument or an agreed outcome with legal force under the UN Framework Convention for Climate Change (UNFCCC) will be developed. Currently all Parties are in agreement to reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions under this future arrangement.
