Minister Nkoana-Mashabane leads SADC Electoral Observation Mission to the Republic of Botswana for the General Elections
International Relations and Cooperation Minister Maite Nkoana-Mashabane has arrived in Gaborone, Republic of Botswana, where she is leading the SADC Electoral Observation Mission (SEOM) to Botswana on behalf of President Jacob Zuma, Chairperson of the SADC Organ on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation.
The Republic of Botswana is holding its 11th democratic elections today and SADC has deployed more than 100 Observers across Botswana to observe the general conduct of the elections.
The mandate of the SEOM to Botswana, which was launched on 10 October 2014, is to assess compliance with the provisions of the SADC Principles and Guidelines Governing Democratic Elections, the Constitution and Electoral Laws of Botswana.
Minister Nkoana-Mashabane said: “The presence and deployment of the SEOM helps to enhance the credibility of the electoral process, and encourages the development of a culture of democratic norms and values in the region.”
SADC Electoral Observer Missions are undertaken in three phases: i.e. pre-election period, election-day and post-election.
Following the elections, it is expected that SADC will release its preliminary findings on the electoral process on Sunday, 26 October 2014. The final report will be released within 30 days of the election.
