Government Media Statement on the unfolding situation in Lesotho

The South African Government notes with concern the unfolding political and security situation in the Kingdom of Lesotho which has resulted in the prorogation of the country’s parliament.

The ongoing political tensions in the Kingdom have necessitated two visits by the Organ Troika of the Southern African Development Community (SADC). South Africa supports the initiatives of the SADC Organ Troika on Politics, Defence and Security under the leadership of HE President Pohamba of Namibia, which calls on and encourages the political leadership in the Kingdom to engage in a political process to resolve the existing political challenges facing the country within the parameters of the country’s constitution, applicable domestic laws and general democratic principles.
The South African Government has further noted with grave concern the unusual movements of the Lesotho Defence Force Units in the capital, Maseru. The South African Government wishes to reaffirm and reiterate the African Union’s position on the unconstitutional change of governments on the continent and in this regard the South African Government and SADC will not tolerate any unconstitutional change of government in the region and Continent.

The South African Government appeals to all the political leaders in the Kingdom to refrain from any actions that may undermine peace, security and stability in the country.
The South African Government has full confidence in the leadership of the Coalition Government in Lesotho and believes that the Coalition Government will be able to soon resolve the current political challenges. The South African Government commends the mediation efforts of the Christian Council of Lesotho.
