Developments in Libya

The Department of International Relations and Cooperation wishes to inform prospective South Africans travelling to Libya and those currently resident in Libya that the prevailing security situation in Libya is cause for great concern.  The situation remains volatile and unpredictable. Due to the intensity of fighting in Tripoliand Benghazi at present and the wider instability throughout Libya, South Africansare advised to consider their travel with due circumspection .

The South African Ambassador and transferred officials have temporarily beenrelocated out of Libya. Accordingly, South African citizens living and working in Libya should seriously consider relocating until the security situation in Libya improves.

The Department of International Relations and Cooperation reiterates its call to all citizens travelling or working abroad to register on its online registration programme, Registration of South African Abroad (ROSA) so that we can be aware of your whereabouts in case of an emergency or disaster.  The final decision however rests with the individual traveller.
