Hon BG Nthebe, Northwest (ANC) to ask the Minister of International Relations and Cooperation:
(a) How is the alleged threat by the President of Burundi against the deployment of SADC mission affecting peace efforts and;
(b) What precedence is this setting for other conflict riddled countries in Africa in terms of SADC interventions?
REPLY:
(a) There is no planned deployment of SADC troops to Burundi because Burundi is not a member of SADC. However, there are efforts by the East African Community, (EAC) and the African Union (AU) to assist Burundi mainly through facilitating the inclusive political dialogue.
(b) SADC as a region and the AU as a continental mother body always strive for the peaceful resolution of conflicts. Any interventions on the continent are premised on a careful and informed assessment of conditions on the ground inside countries affected by conflicts. Deployments are normally made with the consent of the host country, but interventions can take place if the situations constitute genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity.
