Since the advent of democracy and freedom in South Africa, Africa has been in the forefront of our foreign policy. There are many reasons for this, including the fact that we are an African country and Africa is our immediate neighbourhood. Another important reason is the role played by African governments and peoples in our liberation struggle. Africans offered material, financial and other support to us during our hour of greatest need. Africa, like no other continent, suffered the brunt of the aggressive and destabilising policies of the apartheid regime. We will forever be indebted to Africa for its sacrifices and contribution to the achievement of our freedom and democracy. In addition, Africa is a major trading partner for South Africa with the bulk of our finished products being exported to African countries, thereby contributing immensely to the creation of jobs and wealth for South Africans.

South Africa envisages an African continent which is prosperous, peaceful, democratic, non-racial, non-sexist and united in a world that is just and equitable. This vision is aligned to the African Union’s Agenda 2063, which is about the Africa that is prosperous, integrated, well-governed and strong – the Africa we want and that all of us will be proud of.

South Africa, as mandated by the Organisation of African Unity, played a major role in the resolution of the secessionist crisis in the Comoros, leading to the signing of the Fomboni Accord on 17 February 2001. The conclusion of the Fomboni Accord has been a major milestone in building national unity, peace, stability and democracy in the country. The successful holding of recent Presidential elections bears testimony to this fact.

As the Comoros enters a new era of consolidating its democracy and advancing its development agenda, South Africa remains committed to being a reliable and dependent partner to the country. We are committed to deepening and broadening our bilateral relations across all sectors and spheres of government.

The Embassy stands ready to share our experiences, knowledge and skills in transforming society and developing progressive policies and governance structures, including state institutions. With our Comorian partners, we will be working to improve economic relations between our countries, especially in the areas of trade and investments.

Some important work has already been done in identifying some of the challenges and the next sphere of work will entail finding solutions to these challenges for the mutual benefit of the two countries and its peoples.
