| President Cyril Ramaphosa has expressed deep sadness at the passing of liberation struggle veteran and respected diplomat Ambassador Eddie Funde, who passed away on Tuesday, 22 May 2018. |
|
|
| |
Ambassador Funde served as the first Chief Representative of the African National Congress (ANC) in the Australasian and Pacific region and later as South Africa’s Ambassador to the Federal Republic of Germany. He also played a leading role in the communications sector in the early years of democracy in the country, including as Chairperson of the Board of the South African Broadcasting Corporation.
He was instrumental in the development of the 1996 White Paper on Telecommunications Policy, which led, among others, to the formation of the South African Telecommunications Regulatory Authority, on which he later served as Deputy Chairperson.
Ambassador Funde also served as President and Board Chairperson of the South African Communications Forum and Executive Director of the South African Research and Development Trust.
“South Africa has lost a selfless and outstanding struggle activist in former Ambassador Funde who contributed immensely to the struggle for freedom and the development of the democratic South Africa,” said President Ramaphosa. “His passing is an enormous loss not only to his family, but to the nation at large, as this constitutes the loss of a wealth of knowledge and experience, particularly in our reinvigorated international relations”.
The President added that the country had lost a principled and esteemed freedom fighter. “On behalf of government and the citizens of our country, we convey our heartfelt condolences to the Funde family and Ambassador Funde’s political home, the ANC. Our prayers and thoughts are with them in this difficult period. May his soul rest in peace,” the President said. |

It has been reported that the plane, flying domestically, burst into flames shortly after take-off from the Cuban capital.
President Ramaphosa said the thoughts of the South African people were with the sisterly people of Cuba, particularly the families that had lost their loved ones.
The South African Embassy in Havana is in contact with local authorities and stands ready to provide assistance should there be any South African citizens affected, either directly or indirectly, by the disaster. |

Dr Phillip Nchipi Tabane is celebrated worldwide by jazz enthusiasts as the founding member of the Malombo Jazzmen, a trio whose music has been described as spiritual, mesmerising, unique and spell-binding.
Dr Tabane, called “Malombo” by his legion of fans, has been a source of influence to many jazz artists and collaborated with the likes of the late Busi Mhlongo, Abigail Khubheka and Vusi Mahlasela, to name a few. He has won many accolades, including the 1998 South African Music Award for Best Single for his hit, Kea Bereka.
President Ramaphosa conferred an Honorary PhD in Music and Cultural Anthropology on Dr Tabane in 1998 as the then Chancellor of the University of Venda.
“Dr Phillip ‘Malombo’ Tabane was rightly considered a luminary by his peers and those he mentored, as his unique sound spoke to spirits both living and those departed. It was truly healing and uplifting listening to his music and watching him perform. His physical silence leaves a great void but his sound lives on in our nation’s heart and memory, and our cultural heritage,” President Ramaphosa said. |

| VOLVO INVESTS R25 MILLION IN YES INITIATIVE |

| Responding to President Cyril Ramaphosa’s “Thuma Mina” initiative, the Volvo Group Southern Africa is introducing a Youth Employment Initiative. The global Swedish automobile giant hopes that the initiative, unveiled on Saturday, 19 May 2018, in its assembly plant in Durban, will help address South Africa’s high unemployment rate among the youth. |

Since 2015, Volvo Group Southern Africa has invested more than R86 million on apprenticeship training, automotive industry learnerships, disabled persons’ learnerships, as well as internships. This year, the President of Volvo Group Southern Africa, Torbjörn Christensson, said the company was investing another R25 million as part of the Youth Employment Service (YES), which will target TVET college students.
During the course of the year, the company will also establish a specialised Driver Training Academy to address the shortage of skilled drivers in the region, at an investment of R1,4 million. They are also continuing with their involvement in Star for Life, a non-profit organisation that aims to provide young people in southern Africa with essential life skills, sports training and health education at a tune of R7,8 million.
Volvo’s initiative is in line with the YES Initiative led by President Ramaphosa. Launched in March, the initiative between business, government, labour and civil society will see businesses creating one-year paid positions for youth aged between 18 and 35 with a minimum paid stipend of R3 500 a month. Christensson said Volvo believed in the future of South Africa, especially in the youth and the endless potential they hold. “As a global company, with a strong commitment to the success of South Africa, we also support government’s initiative to focus on youth development as is envisioned in initiatives such as the proposed Youth Employment Service,” Christensson said.
President Ramaphosa, who addressed the launch on Saturday afternoon, welcomed the commitment from Volvo, saying it would go a long way in addressing the high rate of youth unemployment, which he said was the greatest challenge to social development in South Africa.
The President added that the development of the skills for South Africa’s youth was a shared responsibility between business, government and labour. “We call on companies to join the programme, not only to increase the chances of employment for many thousands of young people but also so that the companies themselves can develop the young workforce that they will need to expand and grow.”
Before the start of the launch, President Ramaphosa toured the assembly plant at Amanzimtoti. The plant produces 10 trucks a day. The plant contributes to the group’s employment of around a 1 000 people in its assembly plants in Durban, as well as in Rosslyn, Pretoria.

The meeting was held in preparation for the G20 Leaders' Summit, which will be held in November 2018. Argentina holds the rotating Presidency of the G20. |

The meeting focused on strengthening multilateralism, improving global governance and achieving sustainable development. The meeting also deliberated on gender issues, particularly the protection of the girl child in conflict areas. Furthermore, the meeting discussed fair trade, Africa free trade and partnership for development.
At a time when the world is experiencing numerous political and security challenges, including instances of unilateralism and protectionism, the meeting reaffirmed the centrality of the multilateral system, with the United Nations (UN) at its apex.
The G20 has a key role and stake in supporting a rules-based, open and fair multilateral trading system, anchored through the World Trade Organisation.
With the Fourth Industrial Revolution upon us, the ministers agreed on the need to develop appropriate responses to mitigate the possible disruptive impact of digitisation on the world of work. South Africa’s emphasis on the principle of inclusivity, focusing on science, technology and innovation, was supported by many delegations. In this regard, Minister Sisulu noted that: "Measures should be taken to bridge the digital and physical infrastructure gap, through the transfer of technology, skills and financial resources."
The meeting further noted that, in the context of growing inequality between and within states, the G20 should promote inclusive growth with a specific focus on youth and women.
Minister Sisulu used the G20 platform to engage in bilateral discussions with several of her colleagues and secured their endorsement of South Africa’s Candidature for the UN Security Council (SC) Seat for the period 2019 to 2020.
Minister Sisulu said: "South Africa will lend its support to Argentinian efforts to use the G20 as an effective instrument for promoting peace and development."
Minister Sisulu also engaged in a number of bilateral engagements, including with Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa (BRICS) ministers and UNSC members.
The South African delegation at the meeting included Deputy Minister Luwellyn Landers as well as senior officials. |

"During his stint in Berlin, Ambassador Funde laid the foundation for what is now a solid political, economic, trade and people-to-people relationship between South Africa and Germany," said Minister Sisulu.
The Minister added that Ambassador Funde belonged to a generation of exiled activists who fought for freedom and returned home to contribute towards normalising South Africa's relations with Africa and the world.
Details of the memorial service and funeral will be communicated in consultation with the family. |

The BRICS Forum comprises Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa and focuses on key strategic global issues such as the global economy, trade, peace and security and reform of multilateral institutions.
The forum also engages on issues related to Agenda 2030 as well as the Sustainable Development Goals, with the inclusion of the Addis Ababa Action Agenda, adopted in July 2015 with the aim of addressing the challenges of financing and creating an enabling environment for sustainable development.
The two-day meeting provided a platform for deliberations on matters that will strengthen cooperation on various environmental issues, with strong focus on the circular economy among BRICS countries. This is in line with the draft Memorandum of Understanding on environmental cooperation between the member countries.

| A delegation of local companies is exploring trade and investment opportunities and relations in Kenya and Tanzania. |

The Department of Trade and Industry (dti) is leading 19 South African companies on a Trade and Investment Mission (TIM) to the two East African countries.
The objective of the TIM that got underway on Monday, 21 May 2018, is to deepen bilateral trade and investment relations between South Africa and the two nations.
The Minister of Trade and Industry, Rob Davies, said the TIM would serve as a build-up on the success of the previous mission, which the dti led in 2017.
“The mission will further serve as continuous economic engagement efforts by South Africa to ensure increased levels of bilateral trade and investment between South Africa and these two East African countries.”
The Minister added that the 2017 mission outlined the vast opportunities that were available for South African companies in both markets, including the presence of South African goods and services in these high-growth markets.
For South Africa, he said, Kenya and Tanzania remained strategic and important partners.
He said expanding trade and investment relations between South Africa and Kenya was particularly important, with South Africa being the regional hub in southern Africa and Kenya the regional hub in East Africa.
The trade relations with Tanzania are equally important and beneficial.
“Tanzania is strategically located, with it ports serving as an entry point to the East African Community. This strategic advantage is therefore useful for South African companies seeking to penetrate the landlocked markets of Rwanda, Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda, which are dependent on Tanzania’s port resources,” said Minister Davies.
The sectors targeted for the trade mission that will conclude on Friday, 25 May 2018, include agriculture and agro-processing, chemicals, plastic and pharmaceuticals, infrastructure (such as roads, rail, bridges and ports) and the built environment professional services.
The programme for the TIM includes business seminars, business-to-business meetings and site visits.

| LOCAL WINE COMPANY SEALS MAJOR DEAL IN CHINA |

| A South African wine company has secured a deal which will see it export wine to China. |
|

The Western Cape’s Thandi Wines has secured a one-year contract with a Chinese distributor to export their range of premium wines to China.
The contract was agreed to on the margins of the 19th SIAL China International Trade Fair for Food, held recently in Shanghai. About 23 local companies participated in the food fair led by the Department of Trade and Industry (dti).
The Managing Director of Thandi Wines, Vernon Henn, said that the contract value sat at more than R700 000.
“We will commence the contract with a shipment of two containers that will be having more than 26 000 bottles. We will then follow that up with another two containers. Thereafter, the contract will be renewed on an annual basis,” Henn said.
The company’s main export destination has been Europe, which accounts for over 85% of the company’s sales.
However, the company recently started experiencing stagnation in growth in Europe.
“This compelled us to repackage our marketing strategy and explore other markets, in this instance the Asian market. That decision has presented us with some welcomed rewards, more especially because this is a growing market with a lot of potential customers.”
“The main ingredient required is timing and the dti nailed it on the head by bringing us here at this stage. The timing is impeccable because people are already looking to make purchases in preparation for the Chinese new year which will be during the end of February next year,” said Henn.
Thandi Wines was established in 1995 as South Africa’s first agricultural Black Economic Empowerment project. It is owned by 250 farm worker families who hold 62% shares in the company

The Minister said this when briefing journalists ahead of tabling the Correctional Services Budget Vote Speech in the Old Assembly Chamber in Parliament recently.
Masutha said the launch of the Mandela Rules was one of the things that would be unveiled to commemorate the centenary birthday celebrations of struggle icons Nelson Mandela and Albertina Sisulu.
“In July this year, our country will launch the Nelson Mandela Rules for the Treatment of Prisoners.
“The Mandela Rules, which Cabinet approved in March this year, are a set of universally acknowledged minimum standards for the treatment of prisoners to which member states of the United Nations committed themselves in December,” he said. |

| SA TO SEND PLASTIC POLLUTION PACKING |

| The Minister of Environmental Affairs, Edna Molewa, announced an "ambitious new strategy", the Source to Sea initiative, to combat plastic pollution. |

"Marine pollution is one of the biggest challenges we face today and threatens fragile ecosystems," she said in her Budget Vote Speech recently.
She said South Africa had a number of measures in place to tackle this problem.
"The National Pollution Laboratory operated by the Walter Sisulu University has been established and laboratory work will soon be commencing. This will allow for in-depth analysis of the samples that could not be done in the field."
She said South Africa was among countries that had endorsed the United Nations (UN) Environmental Programme's Clean Seas Campaign aimed at stepping up international, regional and national efforts to combat marine litter.
"In implementing this campaign, I would like to announce the piloting of the department's Source to Sea Initiative. It is an ambitious new strategy to investigate and combat pollution, in particular plastic pollution, which threatens both freshwater and marine ecosystems," she said.
She said government was committed to minimising plastic pollution.
"In line with resolutions taken at the UN General Assembly and UN Environmental Assembly respectively, this year, we have conducted a plastic material study in collaboration with industry, the South African Bureau of Standards, the National Regulator for Compulsory Specifications, National Treasury and the Department of Health."
She said the department was also consulting with the cosmetics industry to phase out the use of micro beads in cosmetics.
Molewa said her department, with the Department of Trade and Industry and Treasury, would also review the impact of the implementation of plastic bag policies.
"We will continue to work with the packaging sector – paper, glass, plastic and metal – to increase over and above 58% the amount of waste diverted from landfill," she said.

| SA ISSUES NEW BONDS IN INTERNATIONAL MARKETS |

| South Africa recently issued two new bonds in the international capital market, National Treasury announced recently. |
|

“On 15 May 2018, the Republic of South Africa successfully placed US$2 billion in notes maturing in 2030 (12-year) and 2048 (30-year) in the international capital markets through an intra-day execution,” said National Treasury.
Proceeds from the bond issuance will be used to finance government’s foreign currency commitments.
The breakdown of the total issuance amount consisted of US$1,4 billion on the 12-year tranche and US$600 million on the 30-year tranche.
The transaction was more than 1,7 times oversubscribed in aggregate with investor demand from across all the major financial centres in the United States, Europe, the United Kingdom, Middle East and Asia.
Treasury said the 2018 Budget Review specified an amount of US$9 billion to be raised in international capital markets as part of South Africa’s annual borrowing requirement over the medium term.
“The South African Government sees the success of the transaction as an expression of investor confidence in the country’s sound macro-economic policy framework and prudent fiscal management.”
The National Treasury mandated Deutsche Bank/ Nedbank (consortium), J.P. Morgan, Rand Merchant Bank and Standard Bank as Joint Book runners. The appointment included each bank’s Black Economic Empowerment partners, namely RHO Capital and Pamoja Capital, Dew Partners, Basis Points Capital, and Africa Rising Capital, respectively.

| The month of June 2018 will mark 33 years of the death of the Cradock Four anti-apartheid activists. |
|
|
| |
To commemorate their contribution to the establishment of a democratic South Africa, the Minister of Tourism, Derek Hanekom, will hand over facilities at the Cradock Four Garden of Remembrance to the Inxuba Yethemba Local Municipality in the Eastern Cape, on 1 June 2018.
The Department of Tourism constructed and repaired various aspects of the memorial as part of the greater objective of the National Tourism Sector Strategy (NTSS 2016-2026) to improve visitor experience through the development of tourism infrastructure at rural nodes, and to ensure that South Africans enjoy the broad-based benefits of tourism.
The Cradock Four Garden of Remembrance was built in memory of the four anti-apartheid activists Matthew Goniwe, Sicelo Mhlawuli, Sparrow Mkhonto and Fort Calata. It is envisioned that the infrastructure improvements will enable the community to host more educational and cultural activities that will facilitate information sharing, and the celebration of the legacy of the four activists and those that fought against oppression. |

| SA IMPROVES ITS EVENT HOSTING RANKING, AS JOZI SHINES |

| The International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA) has ranked Cape Town as the number one city in Africa for business tourism, with Joburg making solid year on year improvements. |

The Mother City, despite facing the drought challenges of severe water restrictions, ranks in the top 40 destinations for business tourism in the world. This is the 10th consecutive year that Cape Town has achieved this accolade, hosting a total of 53 meetings to date.
Cape Town’s ranking is followed by Johannesburg with 23 meetings, and Kigali with 21 meetings. Stellenbosch was also ranked after hosting eight international meetings last year, placing them in 12th position.
Barcelona has claimed the first place in the ICCA city rankings by number of meetings in 2017 for the first time since 2004 – hosting a total of 195 meetings, says ICCA, followed by Paris and Vienna with 190 events each.
Jozi is rapidly gaining a growing popularity it seems. The City of Gold has made TripAdvisor's top 10 list in the Travellers' Choice Awards for Best Destinations in Africa.
Rendani Khorommbi, Deputy Director of Joburg Tourism Convention Bureau, said that the recently released ICCA rankings of 2017 showed that Jozi had improved on its 2016 results.
The theory as to why is due to the fact that they had hosted 23 ICCA qualifying meetings as opposed to the 14 meetings held in 2016, says Khorommbi.
"Joburg's improvement in its ICCA rankings is thanks to a collaborative effort with our industry partners, peers and stakeholders and confirms the city's status as a strongly competitive , global business events destination," says Khorommbi.

“And if we don’t have … ask for it, and we’ll try to get it in the next order,” Thato promises.
The reason she opened the shop is because it’s been getting harder and harder for her to get all her own favourite products from South Africa.
“Most of us depended on one store that’s about an hour and a half away … and supplies were limited. Then you have non-South Africans selling us our food! It just made me wonder why is it we as a people have to let other nationalities do what WE should be doing!” she says.
“I’m an administrator and nurse by profession and both are just draining me,” she told SAPeople.
“Hence, I decided to take a chance and do what MY SA people will love!”
Thato, who now lives in Brantford in south-west Ontario, has been in Canada since 1985. It’s a long way from Tladi Loc in Soweto where she grew up.

“Last night, six years later, 16 000 people joined me at the O2 Arena in London for one of the greatest shows of my life!
This was the first time the award-winning stand-up had performed in the UK for two and a half years, after his two sold-out shows at Hammersmith’s Apollo in December 2015.
Trevor, who is Africa’s most successful comedian, has seen his international popularity soar since taking over as host of The Daily Show in 2015.

| Academy Award winner, Charlize Theron is set to make a return to South Africa, shooting a Hollywood drama based on the country’s colonial past. |

The Benoni-born actress will star in the feature film, titled Diamonds in the Dirt, alongside Athandwa Kani, who recently appeared in the blockbuster, Black Panther as the younger King T’Chaka, as well as his former co-star in popular local soapie, Generations, Zenande Mfenyane.
As reported by the Daily Dispatch, the movie is directed and written by Indian filmmaker, Aadhitya Bahudhanam, and revolves around the true-life events of the Frontier Wars between AmaXhosa and the European settlers in the 18th century.
“We want to tell the story to the whole world,” Bahudhanam is quoted by the publication.
“This international feature film was inspired by the true-life events of the arrival of the first Christian missionary in Mount Coke in the 18th century.”
He was speaking at a media briefing in East London, where he revealed the cast of the film, which will be shot against the backdrop of the mountains of the Amathole Mountains and the Great Kei River.
“I first conceptualised the film in India and as I was trying to see if there are any characters based on my story ideas,” Bahudhanam said.
“I coincidentally found that an Eastern Cape tribal chief Chief Mhala Ndlambe had a similar life story.
Bahudhanam will co-produce the film with Eastern Cape-based production company, Next Media Film Productions, and they aim to boost the local film industry by employing a cast which largely hails from the Eastern Cape.
“Many filmmakers come to the Eastern Cape with their cast and crew members and just shoot and leave without ploughing anything back into the province,” co-producer, Nosabatha Nyumbeka said.

| It seems there's no bottom to Michelin star chef Jan-Hendrik van der Westhuizen's creative well. He released his own range of wines at the beginning of this year under the label, JAN, and added a new dining area called Maria, to his restaurant in Nice. "I've always kept a journal", he says. "I love keeping notes and taking photographs".
He says that on Sundays when the team is off, he's always shooting things and being creative in some way or another. And JAN the JOURNAL is, in essence, an assemblage of all his work.
"I think that a cookbook can get old and a bit dated and you can only really have recipes in it and not much space for other things, maybe a small story here and there, but I wanted to do more".
JAN the JOURNAL is a bi-annual magazine that is part coffeetable cookbook, part lifestyle magazine and travelogue with a special focus on South African ingredients and recipes. He wants to give South Africans, who can't visit France, access to the kind of things he does there.
"70% of the content is South African-focused ... including recipes and all of my favourite South African suppliers". The book is beautifully curated with each page making you fall in love with food and ingredients all over again.
"We have a responsibility as chefs", he says emphatically. "We are influencers of how people eat and how to look after the planet".
At his restaurant in Nice, Jan and his team are very cognisant of food wastage and the concept of sustainability. He even writes on his blog about how you can reduce food waste at home.

This latest whitewash comes after the hosts achieved their first-ever five-nil sweep in the ODI series that ended last week, rounding off a successful, confidence-boosting tour ahead of what will be a tougher outing to England next month.
The team will leave for England on 3 June where they will play the hosts in a three-match ODI series and a T20I triangular series that will also feature New Zealand.

South Africa whitewashed Bangladesh 5-0 in the series played between 4 and 14 May, and several of their players rose up the rankings announced on the ICC's website as a result.
Khaka's rise, by 590 ranking points, made it four South African bowlers in the top 10, with Marizanne Kapp (3), Shabnim Ismail (6) and Dane van Niekerk (9) holding their positions.
Raisibe Ntozakhe, who topped the wicket-takers' chart with eight wickets, made the most notable jump, surging up 31 places from 85th to 54th among bowlers.
Khaka, the second-highest wicket-taker, claimed seven wickets from four matches. She also registered her career-best bowling figures in the third match, returning match figures of 3/13.
Chloe Tryon, the vice-captain, who had two player of the match performances in the series, climbed in in both the batting, bowling and all-rounder rankings.
Tryon moved up four places to 22nd in the batting rankins, up 14 places to 67 in the bowling rankings and up 14 to be 21st among all-rounders.
Van Niekerk, the captain, moved up to third on the all-rounders list. She contributed with four wickets and 73 runs in the series.
Ellyse Perry continues to be No 1 among batters and all-rounders, while Jess Jonassen tops the bowling charts

Two years ago, Jireh van Staden was officially not participating in any sport, but he is love for jumping led to him winning a gold medal at the recent African Junior Trampoline Championships in Cairo.
The Pretoria gymnast, along with Siyabulela Siwa, Luka Angileri and Enzo Henning won gold in the team competition. The 14-year old was fourth in the individual double mini-competition.
Van Staden, who is doing home-schooling, said the only real exercise he got two years ago was bouncing around on a mini-trampoline at home. His mom suggested that he should take it up as a sport. At first, he refused as he considered it to be boring but later on, after doing some research, he reconsidered and joined the Tuks Trampoline Club.
Lucky Radebe, a former African champion who finished seventh at the 2009 World Games and participated in the 2014 World Championships, started to coach him.
One of the first things Radebe taught his young protégée was that it was not about jumping as high as you could while trying doing backwards and forwards somersaults.
“To be successful in trampoline, means you need to be strong and flexible but you should also have good body control and body awareness,” said Radebe after the team returned from Cairo.
According to Radebe, the sport basically boils down to being fearless and having mind control. The human body is capable of amazing feats if the mind allows it certain freedom.

Mountain bikers can enjoy unlimited uplift cable car rides to access some of the best riding in South Africa.
Lift-assisted riding is the default in established mountain biking venues throughout the Alps and Canadian Rockies.
For years, the potential of Hartbeespoort’s cable car teased Gauteng mountain bikers who like going downhill fast. For Hartbeespoort local, Charl van Zyl, the Magaliesberg range had always hold the promise of cable car-assisted mountain biking. After years of imagining exactly how he’d shape, cut and build a world-class trail down the mountain, he was approached by some other locals in January and given a nearly impossible deadline for delivery in March of this year.
With access and encouragement from landowner, WC du Plessis, Charl and his team of five trail gnomes worked tireless on the steep Magaliesberg terrain to shape a brilliant downhill trail, with many jumps and other challenging features, finishing it in time for the 2018 South African championships. The event was a massive success and showed that cable car-assisted mountain biking could work in South Africa.
The actual downhill track is currently only open on weekends. Located within the Hartbeespoort Adventure & Trail Park, there are associated trails close to it, with more being planned – all part of a vision to create a mountain biking destination of choice in Magaliesberg.
