2014 WILL BE MOMENTOUS |

| President Zuma called on South Africans to unite beyond barriers of race, creed, and gender or class so that the country could succeed in confronting the challenges it faces. |

The year ahead will be a momentous year for South Africa as the country marks its 20 years of freedom and democracy, President Jacob Zuma said in his New Year message.
The President said that the year ahead would give South Africans an opportunity to reflect on how the country had achieved its freedom and democracy - and on the progress it had made in the last two decades.
“We will also reflect on how we will continue to work together as a nation as we implement our vision 2030 as outlined in the National Development Plan."
South Africa was a much better place than it was in 1994, he said, and life had changed for millions of South Africans. But "our work is not yet completed. We must continue working together in 2014 to build a South Africa of our dreams … we must continue to build a South Africa which inspires people to achieve greater things for themselves and their country".
President Zuma said a prosperous South Africa would be achieved when there was work for everyone, when it became a society where everyone could make a meaningful contribution to the development of the country. Source: www.southafrica.info |

SOUTH AFRICANS LIVING ABROAD INVITED TO REGISTER FOR THE 2014 ELECTIONS |

Provision has been made for two special registration weekends, on 18 and 19 January and 25 and 26 January 2014, to accommodate South Africans living abroad who are unable to register at their nearest South African foreign mission during normal working hours. |

The Electoral Commission and the Department of International Relations and Cooperation are collaborating to register South Africans living outside of the country as voters for the very first time.
This follows the presidential assent to the Electoral Amendment Act No. 18 of 2013 and the publication of amendments to the Regulations on the Registration of Voters late last year.
In terms of the amended regulations, South Africans living outside of the country who wish to vote in next year’s national election are required to register in person either in South Africa or at one of South Africa’s 124 Embassies, High Commissions or Consulates-General located in 108 countries.
These South Africans need to be in possession of a valid South African identity document (either a green bar-coded South African ID book, a new smart-card ID or a valid temporary identity certificate) and a valid South African passport to register. South African citizens living outside of the country and who are already registered as voters in South Africa do not need to register again.
Applications for registration take place during normal office hours of the various missions until Friday, 7 February 2014. A list of South African missions is available on http://www.dirco.gov.za/foreign/sa_abroad/index.htm. South Africans living abroad are urged to confirm the working hours of their nearest foreign mission before attempting to apply for registration to avoid disappointment.

PRESIDENT ZUMA PARTICIPATES IN THE FIFTH ORDINARY SUMMIT OF THE ICGLR |

President Jacob Zuma attended the Fifth Ordinary Summit of the International Conference of the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR) on 15 January 2014 in Luanda, Angola at the invitation of Angolan President Jose Edouardo dos Santos. President Dos Santos assumed the chair of the ICGLR for a two-year period.
President Zuma was accompanied by the Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Maite Nkoana-Mashabane.
The ICGLR Heads of State and Government reviewed, amongst others, progress made in the implementation of the “ICGLR Pact on Security, Stability and Development in the Great Lakes Region” and the “United Nations (UN) Framework for Peace, Security and Cooperation for the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and the Region”. The ICGLR Leaders also focused on the current situation in the Central African Republic (CAR) and South Sudan.
Other matters discussed were on the implementation of the ICGLR Humanitarian Trust Fund; the Lusaka Declaration on the Fight against Illegal Exploitation of Natural Resources; the December 2011 Kampala Declaration on the Fight against sexual gender-based violence (SGBV); the Protocol on Prevention and Punishment of Genocide, War Crimes, Crimes against Humanity and other Forms of Discrimination. Socio-economic development and budgetary matters were also discussed. |

CHAN 2014 OPENS IN CAPE TOWN |

The CHAN tournament, established in 2007 and first contested in 2009, is administered by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and is played between the 16 best national teams in Africa. National teams have to qualify for the event and may only feature players active in their local leagues. Players who play abroad (regardless of where, even in Africa) do not qualify to take part in the competition. |

The 2014 African Nations Championship (CHAN) opened at the Cape Town Stadium on 11 January 2014.
The 16 countries competing are Burkina Faso, Burundi, Congo-Brazzaville, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Gabon, Ghana, Libya, Mali, Mauritania, Morocco, Mozambique, Nigeria, Uganda, Zimbabwe and the host nation South Africa.

WEF TO SCREEN MANDELA MOVIE |

The film has received international critical acclaim and has been released in the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, France, Holland/Netherlands, Portugal, Israel, Iceland, Switzerland, Belgium and the Middle East. Germany, Finland, Norway, Spain, Denmark, New Zealand and India will release the film later this month. |

Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom will be screened at the annual general meeting of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, on 24 January.
Producer Anant Singh, who is a recipient of the forum's Crystal Award, will present the film, which will be screened as a tribute to Nelson Mandela, the former president of South Africa and subject of the film who died in December last year.
The Crystal Award honours artists who have used their art to improve the state of the world.

| LEONARDO’S LEGACY ON DISPLAY |

A travelling exhibition displaying the genius of Renaissance artist, inventor and thinker Leonardo da Vinci is currently on in Cape Town.
Billed as the most comprehensive exhibition on Leonardo to tour the world, the exhibition highlights the “genius of Leonardo” as an inventor, artist, scientist, anatomist, engineer, architect, sculptor and philosopher.
Conceived in Melbourne, Australia, the exhibition has been seen by more than four million people in more than 50 cities, including Bogota, Budapest, Kiev, Las Vegas, Manila, Santiago, Sao Paulo, Seoul, Singapore and Venice, Grande Exhibitions says on its website.
