Message from the Head of Mission

Fellow South Africans and friends of South Africa; Xaweni / Ndaa / Dumela / Sawubona / Greetings / Groete.

I, accompanied by my wife, Mme Matšeliso Shogole (pronounced “Matshediso”, “Tshedi” for short, with the “e” pronounced more like the “i”) arrived in Muscat, Sultanate of Oman in January 2017 and we were warmly received; we network with many business people and inter-act with members of the civil society here, the South Africans in the diaspora and other expatriates.

I take this opportunity to welcome you to the homepage of the Embassy of South Africa in Muscat, Sultanate of Oman.

The Sultanate of Oman, located in the south-eastern quarter of the Arabian Peninsula, is a member of the Gulf cooperation Council (GCC).

South Africa and Oman maintain cordial relationship. Diplomatic relations between the two were established in October 1995 and South Africa opened its Embassy in Muscat in 2002, while the Sultanate opened its Embassy in Pretoria in 2003.  Since the establishment of diplomatic ties, relations between the two have expanded into various fields, aided by the exchange of high-level visits, the negotiation of bilateral agreements and greater people-to-people contact.
Our focus is very clear: to promote South Africa incorporated, grow her economy, create the much-needed long-term sustainable jobs for the unemployed masses of the people of South Africa.

Historically, total trade between South Africa and the Sultanate of Oman shows an upward trajectory; that is, an average growth of approximately 7.08%, since the establishment of the diplomatic ties between the two countries.  The 2016 and 2017 trade figures indicate that South Africa’s exports to the Sultanate increased by a whopping R248m. Also, there is a renewed interest in Cross border investment and tourism between the two countries.

The South African Embassy in Muscat works very closely with Oman-South Africa Friendship Association (OSAFA), particularly on economic diplomacy related issues.  On the social front, the Embassy works closely with the South African Group in Oman (SAGO).  South Africa’s expatriate community in Oman are the proverbial “extension of the South African Embassy here”; they are the country’s business and tourism “ambassadors” and we appreciate those selfless efforts by so many of these compatriots, who continue to fly the colourful South African flag so high; and they continue to encourage the Omanis and Oman residents, Oman-based business people to visit South Africa and savour the country’s unique tourism and business offerings.

Business hours – Consular Section: 08h00 -12h00, Sunday through Thursday.

Note that Friday to Saturday constitutes a weekend in this part of the world.  Therefore, should a South African in the Sultanate require urgent consular assistance, feel free to call the Embassy’s emergency/after-hours number (+968 9942 6250).

South African expats in Oman: check the expiry date of your passport regularly and accordingly, arrange to renew same well in advance; bearing in mind that documents of this nature (passports, birth certificates, etc.) are produced by the Department of Home Affairs in South Africa and not by the Embassy.
