Dlamini Zuma to Attend African Union Executive Council
of Ministers Meeting, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, 30 June

Addis Ababa - South African Foreign Minister Dr Nkosazana
Dlamini Zuma is expected to arrive in Addis Ababa on
Tuesday 29 June ahead of President Thabo Mbeki for the
African Union's Executive Council of Ministers meeting,
Peace and Security Council Ministerial meeting and the
Summit of Heads of State and Government scheduled for
30 June - 8 July 2004, Ethiopia.
The Executive Council of Foreign Ministers (30 June
-3 July) is expected to discuss and make recommendations
to the Heads of State and Government on the following
issues:
- The vision and Mission of the African Union Commission
as formulated by the Chairperson of the Commission,
Alpha Omar Konaré which will govern the way
in which the Commission performs its functions until
2007
- The work plan for the Commission until 2007
- The first report of the Peace and Security Council
- The proposed AU non-Aggression Pact; and
- Reports on progress made with regard to NEPAD, the
operationalisation of the Pan-African Parliament (PAP),
meeting of intellectuals and the Diaspora.
SOUTH AFRICA TO CHAIR THE AFRICAN PEACE AND SECURITY
COUNCIL
Addis Ababa - South Africa will assume the Chairpersonship
of the African Peace and Security Council for the month
of July. In this regard, South African Foreign Minister,
Dr. Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma will chair the meeting of
the Council scheduled for Sunday, 4 July 2004 in Addis
Ababa, Ethiopia.
South Africa is one of the five countries in the continent
that has been elected to serve a three-year term on
the 15-members Security Council. Other members include
Nigeria, Algeria, Ethiopia, and Gabon while Lesotho,
Mozambique, Cameroon, Congo, Kenya, Sudan, Libya, Ghana,
Senegal and Togo will serve two year terms.
The Security Council will discuss and make recommendations
to the Summit of Heads of State and Government (scheduled
for 6-8 July) on the following issues:
- Darfur;
- Burundi;
- the Democratic Republic of Congo; and
- the Ivory Coast.
The Security Council will also discuss recommendations
for the implementation of the African Standby Force
and Early Warning and response system of the AU.
As current Chair of the Peace and Security Council,
South Africa's President Thabo Mbeki will present the
recommendations of the Executive Council Ministers chaired
by Minister Dlamini Zuma to the Assembly of Heads of
State and Government.
