President Thabo Mbeki to Attend the
NEPAD Heads of State Meeting, Maputo, Mozambique (23
May 2004) and the Inauguration Ceremony of Malawi's
President-Elect, Blantyre, Malawi (24 May 2004)
President Thabo Mbeki, accompanied by Minister of Foreign
Affairs, Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma, will attend the
10th New Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD)
Heads of State and Government Implementation Committee
(HSGIC) Meeting in Maputo, Mozambique on Sunday, 23
May 2003.
The HSGIC is mandated by the African Union (AU) to
manage the implementation of the NEPAD programme and
to provide strategic direction and leadership for the
NEPAD process as the socio-economic development programme
of the AU.
The Maputo meeting will review progress (since the
last HSGIC meeting in Kigali, Rwanda on 14 February
2004) of the various NEPAD programmes and to chart the
way forward ahead of the AU Summit scheduled for Addis
Ababa, Ethiopia in July 2004.
Topics for discussion include:
· an update on the implementation of regional
infrastructure projects
· a report on the 2nd Africa Partnership Forum
meeting held in Maputo, Mozambique on 16-17 April 2004.
· Multilateral Trade Negotiations and Market
Access issues
· an update on integration of NEPAD into AU structures
and processes
· Science and Technology Strategies for Improving
Agricultural Productivity and Food Security in Africa
· Mutual Reviews of Development Effectiveness
in Africa in the context of NEPAD
· Report on the 1st meeting of the UK Commission
for Africa held on 4 May 2004 (Minister T Manuel serves
on the Commission)
· preparations for the next G8 Summit in the
USA (President Mbeki has been invited to attend the
Summit in June 2004)
· preparations for the NEPAD Annual Report.
Following the New Partnership for Africa's Development
(NEPAD) Heads of State and Government Implementation
Committee Meeting, President Thabo Mbeki will lead the
South African delegation to the Inauguration of the
President-elect of Malawi, scheduled for Blantyre, Malawi
on Monday, 24 May 2004, at the Chichiri Stadium.
