Voter registration for South African citizens living abroad will take place at the South African High Commission from 1 to 4 February 2019.

All South Africa citizens aged 16 and older, in possession of an official South African identity document (either a blue barcoded ID book, a smartcard ID or a temporary ID certificate) are eligible to register as voters.

PLEASE TAKE NOTE: The new Immigration Regulations were gazetted on 22 May 2014 (No 37679) and became effective from 26 May 2014:

 

No application may be accepted from an applicant on a short term visit in a country other than his/her country of origin/residence.

 

Foreign nationals with long-term status in Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Nepal and Maldives may apply at the S.A High Commission in Sri Lanka.

Applications may be submitted in person or by a third party, authorized in writing, to do so. Application forms must be completed (not typed) and signed by the applicant himself/herself.  The format of the forms may not be altered.  Your passport or valid travel document must be valid for no less than 30 days after the expiry of your intended visit and have at least two unused pages (facing each other) for visa, entry/departure endorsements.

Applicants may be required to visit the Consular Section for an interview and/or submit additional documentation to prove the bona fides of the visit over and above the basic requirements.

Any applicant allowed in the RSA due to misrepresentation or false declaration in the application form or applicant who sojourns in the RSA in contravention of his/her permit conditions shall be guilty of an offence and liable for a conviction, fine, become undesirable or imprisonment as an illegal foreigner.

VISA INFORMATION

 

Foreigners subject to South African visa control must be in possession of valid and acceptable passports/travel documents and visas.  Visas are not issued at South African ports of entry and must be obtained at the South African Embassies / High Commissions / Consulates General abroad prior to travel. If you arrive without a visa, immigration officials are obliged to return you on a flight back to your home country.

Visitor's visas issued will be for a 'single entry', unless motivated why a multiple entry must be issued. It is also for a specific period (from date of entry) and contains an expiry date.

Visitors' visas are for international travellers (citizens of other countries) who have permanent residence outside South Africa and who wish to visit the Republic of South Africa on a temporary basis for holiday (tourism), business or transit purposes for a period of 90 days or less.

 

South African visitors' visas may be granted for:

  • visits to family or friends
  • tourism purposes (holiday)
  • business purposes
  • spouse to join a spouse who is in South Africa on a work or study permit
  • children to join parents who are in South Africa on work or study permits
  • fiancée/fiancé to join his or her partner with the intension of marrying within 90 days
  • study purposes (max stay 3-months)
  • charitable or voluntary activities
  • academic sabbaticals / research
  • conferences
  • to work in the production of an movie or show (i.e. in the entertainment industry)
  • for medical purposes (max stay 3-months)
  • sport events

 

Visa processing is at least 10-15 full working days and may take longer if referred to country of origin. Only complete applications are processed. The onus is on the applicant to apply in time.

 

Only in emergency cases (death or medical) with proof of the urgent situation may the processing period be shorter. No other requests will be considered.

Foreign nationals, who require Visas that are valid for longer periods (e.g. one year), must apply in their country of origin.

 

REQUIREMENTS FOR SA VISITOR'S VISA (HOLIDAY OR BUSINESS) OR TRANSIT VISA:

 

Basic requirements:

  • Application form for Visa (BI-84) (Forms completed in English and in black ink).
  • Two (2) identical recent colour passport photos. 
  • Passport valid for no less than 30 days after the expiry of intended visit, with two (2) unused pages (facing each other).
  • Confirmation of long term residence status in country of residence
  • Payment of the prescribed fee paid in cash, if applicable.
  • Yellow Fever Vaccination Certificate, (if travelling to or from a Yellow Fever Zone). See link below.
  • Proof of onward air/sea transport ticket or road transport.
  • Proof of admissibility (visa) in the foreign country of onward ticket.
  • Confirmation of accommodation at a hotel or guest house in SA for all dates.
  • If visiting a friend in South Africa, provide a signed invitation letter from the SA hosts. It should include the full name, SA ID number, full address, contact number, email and certified copies of host's ID or passport and permit (non-SA). The person must also confirm if he/she is responsible for your accommodation, meals, transport and if needed, the repatriation costs.
  • For minors: un-abridged birth certificates and letter of consent if not accompanied by parents.
  • Proof of financial means: to pay for your living expenses while in South Africa in the form of:
    • Bank statements (certified copies of the original pages for the last 3 months)
    • Undertakings by the host(s) in South Africa (mentioned in his/her letter)
    • Undertakings by hosts country  companies to pay all your expenses
    • Bursary
    • Medical cover / travel insurance
    • Travellers' cheque

 

Holiday Purposes

 

Please provide the following, in addition to above requirements:

 

  • Signed original letter from employer in country of origin reflecting salary, position in company and leave granted for the period of visit or reason for travel. 
  • Confirmation letter of tour or booked holiday itinerary.

 

Business purposes (including Conferences).

 

Please provide the following, in addition to above requirements:

 

  • Signed original letter from employer in country of origin confirming employment, position in company, reason for travel, duration of visit and if they are financially responsible for you. Please also indicate other possible visits to South Africa in the next 3 months (90 days).
  • Letter from the registered company in South Africa that you will visit, duration of visit, reason for visit and/or letter of confirmation/participation at the Conference.  The company registration number and full contact details (telephone numbers, email, street address, etc.) must be on the letter.

Transit Visa

 

As per Immigration Directive 28/2015: Transit Visas:

This Immigration Directive severs to inform travellers that the Minister of home Affairs exempted travellers transiting through the following international airport from transit visas in terms of section 10B (4)(a) of the immigration Act, 2002:

  • OR Tambo international
  • Cape Town international
  • King Shaka; and
  • Lanseria

Travellers transiting these airports must be subjected to biometric capturing… Travellers utilizing land ports of entry to transit through South Africa should apply for Port of Entry Visa. "

TEMPORARY RESIDENCE PERMIT (TRP) INFORMATION

 

Temporary residence permits are issued to applicants who intend to visit South Africa for a longer period of time to work or study.
