| TACKLING GLOBAL INEQUALITY MUST BE A G20 PRIORITY: PRESIDENT RAMAPHOSA |
|
| |
| President Cyril Ramaphosa has reaffirmed South Africa’s commitment to placing the fight against global inequality at the centre of the upcoming G20 Leaders’ Summit to be held in Johannesburg later this month. |
|
| |
Speaking at the handover of the report by the Group of 20 (G20) Extraordinary Committee of Independent Experts on Global Inequality at Tuynhuys on Tuesday, 4 November 2025, President Ramaphosa described the report as a “seminal and rigorous” document that offers a roadmap for addressing one of the world’s most urgent challenges.
“Now, with this report, we have clear actions that we can take as governments, as societies, and as the global community to reduce inequality. It is now up to us, the leaders of the G20 and the leaders of the world, to demonstrate the necessary will and commitment,” he said.
The report, led by Nobel Prize-winning economist Professor Joseph Stiglitz, represents the first comprehensive examination of inequality to be presented to the G20 for consideration.
“This is the first time that a report of this nature on a matter so fundamental to global stability and human progress has presented for consideration by the G20,” President Ramaphosa said.
He emphasised that inequality is not only a moral issue but also a direct threat to democracy, inclusive growth, and global peace.
“This report, which is a blueprint for greater equality, supports the goal of South Africa’s G20 Presidency to put inequality on the international agenda. It correctly asserts that inequality is a betrayal of people’s dignity, an impediment to inclusive growth and a threat to democracy itself. |
|
|
 |
|
| |
“Addressing inequality is our inescapable generational challenge. We have the means to build a fair, just and equal world. We have the resources to narrow the gap between and within countries,” the President said.
President Ramaphosa said the findings and recommendations in the report align with South Africa’s goal as G20 President to ensure that inequality remains a key focus on the global agenda.
He recalled his remarks during the establishment of the Extraordinary Committee in August 2025, when he warned that inequality continues to erode human dignity, citing examples such as vaccine apartheid and the economic fallout of global crises.
“People across the world know how extreme inequality undermines their dignity and chance for a better future. They saw the brutal unfairness of vaccine apartheid, where millions in the Global South were denied the vaccines to save them,” the President said.
The President commended the committee for its work, saying the report provides practical and actionable steps that governments and societies can take to narrow the gap between and within nations.
President Ramaphosa expressed appreciation to Professor Stiglitz, the committee of experts, and supporting organisations such as Oxfam for their contributions to the study.
He said the document will form the foundation for discussions at the upcoming G20 Summit, which South Africa will host for the first time.
“This report provides a solid platform on which to launch a renewed global effort to tackle inequality. I look forward to discussing its findings at the G20 Leaders’ Summit in Johannesburg later this month,” he said.
The Extraordinary Committee of Independent Experts on Global Inequality was established under South Africa’s G20 Presidency in 2025 to examine the structural causes of inequality and propose strategies to achieve a fairer global economy.

| PRESIDENT RAMAPHOSA HAILS “SUCCESSFUL” THREE-NATION VISIT TO SOUTHEAST ASIA |
|
| |
 |
|
| President Cyril Ramaphosa has emphasised the importance of diversifying South Africa’s trade relations as economic turbulence continues on a global scale. |
| |
| |
|
|
| |
This, as the President travelled to Southeast Asia last week in a bid to deepen trade and relations with the nations of Indonesia, Vietnam and Malaysia.
“In the midst of global economic uncertainty, it has become more important than ever for South Africa to diversify its trade and investment relations.
“As we continue to expand trade with traditional partners, we see great value in strengthening links with other countries of the Global South,” the President said in the weekly newsletter, Monday 3 November 2025.
South Africa has a footprint in agricultural exports to the three countries.
“During our visits, we discussed how to expand the range and the quantity of agricultural products we supply these countries, ranging from beef to soybeans to fruit. Among other things, we agreed to look at some of the regulatory barriers to market access,” he said.
Now, more exports are being eyed for the mining sector.
“Over time, each of these countries has expanded their advanced manufacturing capacity, with some taking the lead in semiconductors, batteries and electric vehicles.
“South Africa, with its substantial reserves of critical minerals, is well placed to supply the products that these industries need. We are keen to develop partnerships with these countries to ensure that we add value to these minerals before exporting them.
“This is part of our ambition to move away from being an exporter of raw material to producing finished goods,” President Ramaphosa explained.
During the visit to Southeast Asia, many companies expressed their interest in investing in South Africa.
“Some of these companies already have a presence in our country. All of them recognised the great potential of our economy, our well-developed infrastructure, our world-class financial sector, our independent judiciary and stable institutions.
“A number of companies told us about their plans to build new manufacturing plants in South Africa to serve both our domestic market and markets in the Southern African region and on the African continent. They want to locate their operations in South Africa so that they can take advantage of the African Continental Free Trade Area,” he said.
In solidarity
The President noted that beyond the trade and investment talks that dominated the visit to the region, South Africa and the three nations share a “common approach to international matters”.
“We are all firm advocates of multilateralism and international law, the reform of the United Nations and cooperation between the countries of the Global South. We therefore agreed to work together to promote peace and security, climate action and sustainable development.
“Our common approach was evident also at the 47th Summit of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), which we attended at the invitation of Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. The theme for the ASEAN summit: Inclusivity and Sustainability, mirrors the theme for our G20 Presidency: Solidarity, Equality, Sustainability.
“This underlines the alignment between our vision of the world and that of the countries of Southeast Asia,” he said.
Historical ties also bind the three countries to South Africa, having supported the fight against apartheid.
The Indonesian and Malaysian ties go back even further as South Africa is home to the descendants of peoples of the two nations who were brought to the country by the colonialist Dutch as forced labourers—a community of South Africans now known as the Cape Malay.
“As we recognise these strong historical ties, these visits have been firmly focused on the future. There is enormous potential for greater trade and investment between South Africa and each of these countries.
“Although we are separated by the Indian Ocean, South Africa and Southeast Asia are closer now than we have been before. We share a determination to build a common future of development and inclusive growth from which all our people benefit,” President Ramaphosa said.

| SOUTH AFRICA CONDEMNS SUDAN ATROCITIES, DEMANDS END TO IMPUNITY AND HOSTILITIES |
|
| |
 |
|
| South Africa condemns the abhorrent attacks deliberately targeting civilians and essential civilian infrastructure, including hospitals. We firmly assert that there must be no impunity for the serious violations of international humanitarian law (IHL) and international human rights law (IHRL). The principle of protection of civilians and the safeguarding of essential infrastructure remain non-negotiable legal and moral obligations. |
|
|
| |
These persistent acts of impunity have resulted in a devastating humanitarian catastrophe, leaving over half of the country’s population in dire need of life-saving aid.
The Government of the Republic of South Africa welcomes the emergency meeting convened by the African Union Peace and Security Council (AUPSC) concerning the gravely worsening situation in the Republic of Sudan. The decisive intervention of the African Union (AU) at this critical juncture is a paramount imperative for restoring peace and stability.
The South African Government firmly calls upon the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) to immediately and unconditionally:
- Implement an immediate and verifiable cessation of hostilities.
- Adhere strictly to their obligations under IHL and IHRL, including protecting medical personnel and allowing safe passage for those seeking refuge.
- Ensure rapid, safe, and unhindered humanitarian access to all affected populations across Sudan.
We call upon all external actors and countries involved in this crisis to adhere to international law. This entails moving away from any form of supporting, supplying, or enabling the armed belligerents. South Africa stands ready to support a credible, inclusive process that would lead to a just peace process and to the re-establishment of a civilian-led political transition. The sovereignty and will of the Sudanese people for a democratic future must be respected.

| WORLD’S FIRST GIRAFFE RESEARCH FACILITY OPENS IN SOUTH AFRICA |
|
| |
| The University of the Free State (UFS) has officially launched the world’s first dedicated Giraffe Research Facility at Amanzi Private Game Reserve near Bloemfontein. |
|
|
 |
|
| |
The facility, a project that has been years in the making, aims to protect and understand giraffes at a critical time when populations are shrinking.
“Giraffes are facing a dark future on the continent. They’re going extinct. Twenty years ago, we still had giraffes in 22 countries. Now it’s less than 15 countries. So, for us, it’s a huge concern,” says Prof Francois Deacon, lead researcher and long-time champion of giraffe conservation.
Thankfully, now there is more hope.
The new centre is developed with support from Save the Giraffes, Absolute Genetics, and the Kroonstad Animal Hospital. Designed to advance research into giraffe physiology, genetics, reproduction, and welfare, it will allow scientists to study giraffes up close in a stress-free environment, track hormonal cycles, and even explore assisted reproduction techniques to boost populations.
It’s the work that could lead to better conservation of the species.
“We can work with giraffes much like we do with cattle. We can carry out artificial insemination, embryo implants, and monitor them with sonar daily. We can track their heat and hormonal cycles, which is why it’s so important to habituate them to human presence—touch, smell, and sound,” says Prof Francois Deacon, lead researcher and long-time champion of giraffe conservation.
The new world-first Amanzi facility will ultimately allow researchers to collect important data, test new conservation approaches, and build on earlier genetic discoveries, including the confirmation that giraffes are not one species, but four.
“At the Giraffe Research Centre in Amanzi, we have found a home. A facility that will allow scientists, conservationists, and researchers from all over the world to come together and help giraffes find a safe future.” said Jason Pootoolal, Vice-President of Save the Giraffes.
It’s another win for wildlife in South Africa, as the facility opens the doors to the necessary research that must be done to protect our precious giraffes.

| UP RESEARCHES EARN GLOBAL RECOGNITION WITH BREAKTHROUGH PHYSICS PRIZE |
|
| |
| Two University of Pretoria researchers, Professors Lerothodi Leeuw and Muaaz Bhamjee, have helped South Africa make scientific history, earning global recognition for their work on CERN’s groundbreaking ATLAS experiment in Switzerland. |
|
|
 |
|
| |
The University of Pretoria (UP) is celebrating a major international achievement after two of its researchers were recognised among the world’s best in physics. Professors Lerothodi Leeuw and Muaaz Bhamjee have been awarded the 2025 Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics, together with scientists from CERN, for their contribution to the ATLAS experiment. One of the largest and most ambitious scientific collaborations in the world.
Professors Leeuw and Bhamjee are part of SA-ATLAS, South Africa’s team working with CERN’s Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in Geneva. The LHC is a 27 km underground ring that propels particles to almost the speed of light to help scientists understand how the universe works. Through this project, the UP team contributes to searching for dark matter (the mysterious material believed to make up most of the universe) and upgrading the powerful ATLAS detector that records over a billion particle collisions every second.
“To be part of research and an international team searching for currently unknown particles that constitute dark matter and the related new physics, as well as being involved in the upgrade of equipment to do so, is phenomenal, not to mention the recognition in the 2025 Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics,” Prof. Leeuw said.
Prof. Bhamjee added that the project’s success lies in the spirit of teamwork.
“It is one of the largest collaborative efforts ever attempted in science, with over 5 500 members and almost 3 000 scientific authors. Its success relies on the close collaboration of research teams located at CERN, and at member universities and laboratories worldwide.”
UP only joined the SA-ATLAS collaboration recently, becoming the ninth South African institution to be part of the programme hosted by iThemba LABS under the National Research Foundation. Prof. Bhamjee, who also serves as UP’s institutional representative in the collaboration, believes this milestone strengthens South Africa’s role in international science.
“It represents an exciting step for UP, enabling its researchers to contribute to impactful, transdisciplinary science around the world, while strengthening local collaborations and showcasing African talent on a global scale.”
For Professor Leeuw, the new Head of Physics at UP, this recognition also marks another chapter in an already remarkable journey. Originally from the Northern Cape, he became the first black South African to earn a Bachelor of Science degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the United States of America.
Now, back home, Prof. Leeuw continues to study how galaxies form and evolve over time. He’s now using his platform to inspire the next generation of physicists. Together, they represent the intersection of physics and engineering. Showing how cross-disciplinary teamwork can drive discovery on a global stage.

| SOUTH AFRICAN TAP DANCERS SHINE ON THE WORLD STAGE IN PRAGUE |
|
| |
 |
|
| South African tap dancers have made history at the prestigious IDO World Tap Dance Championships in Prague. South Africa sent a team of 10 dancers to this year’s championships under the South African Body of Dance (SABOD) and the Federation of Dance Sport South Africa, both of which provide local dancers with pathways to compete at an international level through the International Dance Organisation (IDO). |
|
|
| |
Siblings Madeline and Luke Scrase, along with Madison Versfeld, represented South Africa at this year’s competition, which brought together more than 1,700 dancers from 21 countries.
Madeline clinched bronze in the Adult Female Solo category, earning her the title of Second Vice World Champion, while Madison and Luke dominated the men’s division, taking silver and bronze, respectively. This is the first time ever that South Africa had two tap dancers reach the solo finals and land on the podium.
The excitement did not stop there. The Scrase siblings also teamed up for the Adult Duo category, finishing sixth out of 37 pairs, marking the first South African duo to make the finals in 14 years.
Adding to the list of achievements, Madison capped off an incredible run by winning the Battle of the Feet, a high-energy freestyle showdown where dancers improvise live to music selected by the judges. His victory marked yet another first. No South African had ever won the contest before.
In total, four South African performances reached the finals:
- Madeline and Luke Scrase – 6th in Adult Duets

| SOUTH AFRICAN CHAMPS FLY THE FLAG HIGH AT THE LITTER-PICKING WORLD CUP IN JAPAN |
|
| |
| Durban’s very own litter-picking legends have just flown the flag for South Africa at one of the quirkiest and kindest competitions in the world—the Spogomi World Cup in Tokyo. |
|
|
 |
|
| |
It’s not as popular as rugby or cricket, but Spogomi, which is the sport of competitive rubbish collecting, has its own World Cup, which just took place in Tokyo, Japan.
It’s all the fun and quite a challenge. Teams race against the clock to collect as much litter as they can within a set area, sorting it for recycling and earning points based on what they find. It’s fun, fast-paced, and surprisingly addictive. But it also carries a good message.
The whole concept started in Japan as a creative way to get people thinking about waste and how much of it ends up in our oceans.
Earlier this year, South Africa held its own Spogomi qualifier in Durban. Twenty teams showed up with their bags, gloves, and good energy. Together, they collected nearly 190 kilograms of rubbish from residential and commercial areas.
Team Trash Magnets, made up of Shannon Brand, Andrew Clark, and Benjamin Tore, came out on top, earning the chance to represent South Africa at The Nippon Foundation Spogomi World Cup 2025.
Fast forward to Tokyo this week, where they just joined 33 other teams from around the world to compete for the team title of world litter-picking champions.
It was as quirky and colourful as you would expect an event hosted in Japan to be. Before the main competition, all teams were introduced on stage alongside Japanese cosplayers. South Africa’s champs were guided by anime icon Sakura Kinomoto from Cardcaptor Sakura.
Then came the real challenge.
Japan ultimately took home the trophy with over 74 kilograms of waste collected, but our Trash Magnets made us proud just by being there. South Africans care about keeping our communities, beaches, and parks clean, and we can make a difference with a bit of teamwork (and maybe a little competitive spirit too).

| CAPE TOWN RESTAURANT CLAIMS “AFRICA’S BEST” AT WORLD CULINARY AWARDS |
|
| |
 |
|
| Amare, a Mediterranean-inspired restaurant tucked into Bantry Bay, has just been named Africa’s Best New Restaurant 2025 at the World Culinary Awards. |
|
|
| |
The win puts South Africa’s coastal dining scene right back in the spotlight and marks a major milestone for a restaurant that only just turned one year old.
Since opening in October 2024, Amare has built a golden reputation. Their hospitality is warm, they’ve made seaside dining warm and opulent, and their ingredients are fresh and seasonal, playing into those deliciously bold Mediterranean flavours with a twist of Cape Town.
“Our guests are our family,” says the team behind Amare. “They expect dishes inspired by the sun-drenched flavours of France, Greece, Italy, Portugal and Spain. The coastal cuisine paired with South African award winning boutique wines along with a selection of few international offerings makes Amare a favourite with tourists and the local communities.”
The restaurant is parented by Arteche Investment, which also owns the award-winning Aurum.
The World Culinary Awards are regarded as the “Oscars of gastronomy”. They look at excellence across the global restaurant and hospitality industry to crown the very best of the best.
Amare took its spot as Africa’s Best New Restaurant, alongside other big names in Italy last week.
This year, it was hosted at the Forte Village Resort in Sardinia, which was named World’s Best Culinary Resort in the awards. An Italian restaurant, Le Calandre, also took the overall title as World’s Best Restaurant.
Winners are chosen through a global voting process by industry professionals and the public.

| SAFA GAMING SQUAD QUALIFIES FOR FIFAe WORLD CUP |
|
| |
| South Africa’s Rocket League heroes are back on the global stage. The SAFA Gaming national team has officially secured its spot at the Fédération Internationale de Football Association e-Sports (FIFAe) World Cup 2025 after powering through the regional qualifiers against 13 African nations. |
|
|
 |
|
| |
The six-member squad that features some of South Africa’s brightest Rocket League stars, namely Gareth “Snowyy” Spiers, Brayden “Gunzinho” Keith, David “2DIE4” Morgenrood, and reserves Joshua “Sweaty” Kleynhans, Amandla “N1tro” Dlamini, and Umar “Werty” Rasool, earned their places after standout performances at Comic Con Africa and Telkom VS Gaming between July and September.
In the qualifiers, South Africa looked sharp from the get-go, topping Group A before cruising past Seychelles in the quarterfinals and outclassing Egypt in the semis. The team eventually fell to a strong Moroccan side in the finals, one of the continent’s top-paid Rocket League squads, but they still secured their ticket to the World Cup in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, taking place from 15 to 19 December 2025.
Among the stars, “Snowyy” and “2DIE4” return to the national setup, while 18-year-old “Gunzinho” made his debut, holding his own against Africa’s finest.
“We are immensely proud to have the Rocket League back at the FIFAe World Cup,” said SAFA CEO Lydia Monyepao. “We are also delighted that they follow in the footsteps of their traditional football counterparts to qualify for their respective World Cups, which creates a wider scope for the youth to look at SAFA and its opportunities to represent the country at official FIFA tournaments.”
Lydia added that this milestone highlights SAFA’s growing commitment to esports and youth engagement.
“With this success we look to grow eSport and the SAFA gaming community so that we can cement a credible pathway for future digital athletes.”
As excitement builds ahead of Riyadh, fans can already look forward to the next season as registration for the 2026 SAFA Gaming season opens on 1 December 2025. Looks like the search begins for South Africa’s next Rocket League and eFootball stars.

| BOKS RUN RIOT IN LONDON AS JAPAN TORN APART |
|
| |
| The Springboks kicked off their Castle Lager Outgoing Tour in spectacular fashion, demolishing Japan 61-7 in a one-sided clash at Wembley Stadium on Saturday night, 1 November 2025. |
| |
Playing in cold, slippery conditions under the London lights, the reigning world champions produced a powerhouse performance that mixed brute force with clinical precision. By halftime, the scoreboard already read 26-0, and there was never any doubt about the outcome.
South Africa’s eight-try demolition, which included a penalty try, sent a clear warning to France, Italy, Ireland, and Wales, their next four opponents, that the Boks mean business this tour. Having recently defended their Rugby Championship crown, Rassie Erasmus’ side showed the same relentless intensity that has made them the benchmark of world rugby.
Captain Siya Kolisi got the scoreboard ticking early, crashing over from a lineout maul within the first four minutes. Japan’s resistance quickly faded as Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu lit up Wembley with a dazzling first-half display that yielded 14 points, including two brilliant solo tries. |
|
|
 |
|
| |
His first came after he chased down his own up-and-under to score, and moments later, he fooled the Japanese defence with a clever dummy to touch down again. When Japan illegally halted another maul, referee Karl Dickson awarded the Boks a penalty try to seal a dominant opening half.
The Brave Blossoms’ discipline disintegrated further after the break, with two yellow cards compounding their misery. The world champions capitalised on every opportunity, showing their depth and versatility as Erasmus unleashed his trademark “Bomb Squad” to devastating effect.
Wilco Louw powered over for his first Test try shortly after coming on, while Kurt-Lee Arendse continued his hot scoring streak by pouncing on a high kick to add to the tally. Japan’s only bright moment came in the 55th minute when Yoshitaka Yazaki scored from a quick tap, but it barely dented South Africa’s momentum.
Andre Esterhuizen muscled over to extend the lead, and the Boks weren’t done yet; Cheslin Kolbe’s blistering counter-attack set up another try for Arendse before Jesse Kriel capped off the rout with a final flourish.
Aside from a minor injury to prop Ox Nche, it was a near-perfect outing for the Boks, who once again reminded the rugby world why they are the team to beat. Their 61-7 statement victory wasn’t just a win; it was a warning.

| BANYANA BANYANA BOOK THEIR SPOT AT WAFCON |
|
| |
 |
|
| Banyana Banyana have qualified for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) after a tense 1–0 second-leg victory over DR Congo at Dobsonville Stadium. |
|
|
| |
A late strike from star forward Thembi Kgatlana sealed the result, giving South Africa a 2–1 win on aggregate and booking their place at next year’s tournament in Morocco.
For Banyana Banyana, this qualification carries more than just bragging rights; it’s about reclaiming their place among Africa’s elite. After lifting the WAFCON trophy in 2022, the reigning continental champions missed out on retaining it in the most recent edition after placing fourth. Now, with qualification secured, they are ready to chase redemption.
Acting coach Thinasonke Mbuli praised her side’s focus and defensive discipline under pressure, especially in the closing stages of the match.
“We were frustrated towards the end because it was still 0–0 and they were coming at us. I give credit to the defenders for absorbing the pressure.”
Thinasonke also pointed to the challenges ahead, particularly around maintaining match fitness between the end of the domestic season and the start of WAFCON.
“The tricky part now is that WAFCON is in March, and our league is off during that time. We’re going to have to find a balance between players going off-season and remaining active.”
Veteran defender Lebohang Ramalepe was named Queen of the Match after a stellar display at the back, while the team’s resilience once again showed why Banyana remain one of the most respected sides in African football.
With Morocco 2026 now confirmed, they are returning to WAFCON and coming to win it.
