PRESIDENT RAMAPHOSA EXTENDS EID MUBARAK WISHES TO MUSLIM COMMUNITY

On Saturday, 21 March 2026, President Cyril Ramaphosa extended his well-wishes to South Africa’s Muslim community, wishing them Eid Mubarak as they celebrate Eid-ul-Fitr at the end of the holy month of Ramadan.

President Ramaphosa sent wishes to individuals, families, and communities for a joyous and reflective time of prayer, gratitude, unity, and sharing.

The President also invited the Muslim community to reflect, on Human Rights Day, on the constitutional provisions that pertain to religious and cultural practices.

“Our nation shares in this celebration of Eid, in the spirit of goodwill and appreciation of our diversity. For most Muslims, this is a time of faith, family, festivity and bringing joy to less fortunate members of our communities.

“Sadly, this is not the case for all Muslims around the world, as some are engulfed in devastating conflict and unending wars. May the spirit of Ramadan and Eid prevail and bring peace, security and a hopeful future for all of humanity,” President Ramaphosa said.

DEPUTY PRESIDENT CONCLUDES BILATERAL MEETING WITH SOUTH SUDAN

Deputy President Paul Mashatile has successfully concluded a bilateral meeting with the President of the Republic of South Sudan, Salva Kiir Mayardit, at the Menlyn Maine Hotel in Pretoria.

“South Africa remains steadfast in its support for the people of South Sudan as they advance toward sustainable peace, democratic governance, and inclusive development," Deputy President Mashatile said on Friday, 20 March 2026.

The Deputy President, as the President's special envoy focussing on South Sudan, met President Mayardit on his Working Visit to South Africa to discuss strengthening bilateral cooperation, progress on peace and political processes in South Sudan, and follow-up actions from the recent Ad Hoc High-Level Committee on South Sudan (C5) Plus engagements.

The role of the C5 is to oversee the implementation of the Revitalised Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in the Republic of South Sudan (R-ARCSS).

“The two leaders agreed to deepen cooperation in key economic sectors, including mining, transport, and tourism. In this regard, both parties committed to jointly hosting a South Africa–South Sudan Business and Investment Conference, with the first leg scheduled to take place in Juba between May and June 2026,” The Presidency said.

The initiative aims to unlock investment opportunities and promote trade between the two countries.

The meeting also noted progress regarding ongoing engagements toward the possible introduction of a visa-free travel regime between South Africa and South Sudan.

Relevant departments are currently assessing feasibility, with recommendations expected by the end of April 2026.

“In addition, both countries underscored the importance of enhancing air connectivity, including efforts to establish direct flights between South Africa and Juba, with engagements with airlines reportedly underway and a comprehensive aviation cooperation plan being expected in the coming months.

“President Kiir expressed appreciation for South Africa’s continued support in the implementation of the Revitalised Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in South Sudan (R-ARCSS),” The Presidency said.

The R-ARCSS is a legal framework governing South Sudan's transition to peace.

The year 2026 marks a pivotal moment for South Sudan, as the country is earmarked to hold its first-ever elections since gaining independence from Sudan in July 2011.

The two leaders discussed key priority areas emerging from recent C5 engagements, including: support for inclusive political participation and civil society engagement in the lead-up to elections; provision of technical assistance for electoral processes, including potential support from South Africa’s Electoral Commission (IEC); progress on disarmament initiatives; and preparations for South Sudan’s National Dialogue, scheduled for April 2026.

ALL SYSTEMS GO FOR THE SIXTH SOUTH AFRICA INVESTMENT CONFERENCE

Government is ready to host the sixth edition of the South Africa Investment Conference next week, Trade, Industry and Competition Minister Parks Tau said on Monday, 23 March 2026.

“South Africa is open, South Africa is ready, and South Africa is an investment destination of choice,” Minister Tau said.

Addressing the media in Pretoria on the state of readiness for the conference, Minister Tau said more than 31 countries representing international delegates are making their way to South Africa.

“Their growing interest to participate in the 6th South Africa Investment Conference is an illustration that the world sees us as a gateway to Africa, and the ideal place to invest and partner with a developing country that is shaping the world we live in.”

Minister Tau explained that the South Africa Investment Conference was established by President Cyril Ramaphosa in 2018 with the mandate to mobilise both domestic and foreign investment at scale and to translate that investment into jobs, growth, and opportunity for the nation’s people.

“The first five-year investment drive, which ran from 2018 to 2023, was an unqualified success by any measure. South Africa secured R1.56 trillion in investment pledges, surpassing The Presidency's original target by 26%.

“That achievement was not by accident; it was the product of deliberate partnerships, disciplined engagement, and a government that chose to be open for business,” Minister Tau said.

He added that 2024 was a reset moment and that 2025 was the year of implementing the diversification strategy known as the Butterly strategy.

“This strategy enabled us to explore various markets, sell South Africa to the world, and ensure that South Africa is open for business.”

Minister Tau said the first cycle built the framework of trust and partnership, and that the new cycle is about translating pledges into implementation, which demonstrates economic growth and jobs.

“We live in a world of competing demands for capital. Every nation is making the case for why it deserves investor attention. We are making ours not with promises alone, but with proof,” he said.

The country’s ambition is grounded in three pillars, namely:
  • Invest — South Africa offers compelling, high-return sectors backed by policy certainty and strategic infrastructure.
  • Partner — South Africa believes in shared ownership of economic outcomes between government, business, and communities.
  • Prosper — The country is committed to ensuring that investment translates into tangible prosperity for all South Africans.
Following the evidence

“We are not asking investors to take a leap of faith. We are inviting them to follow the evidence,” he said.

Minister Tau said the country offers a technology sector that is primed for exponential growth, a world-class renewable energy opportunity,  and an agro-processing and food security sector with vast untapped potential.

He added that the country has a stable constitutional democracy, an independent judiciary, and a regulatory environment committed to investor protection.

“South Africa is not just a destination — it is a gateway to a continent of 1.4 billion people. The opportunity is real, and it is now,” he said.

The Minister said the country is on track to host the conference on 31 March.

“We are proud to report that almost every key milestone has been met,” he said.

Mobilising sponsors to fund the conference, attracting both domestic and international investors, and mobilising the investor committee to support the project pipeline capture in the National Investment Book were among the milestones mentioned by the Minister.

The upcoming summit builds on the success of the previous five-year investment cycle, which concluded in March 2023, after raising R1.51 trillion, surpassing the initial R1.2 trillion target.

To date, more than R600 billion of these commitments have flowed into projects, supporting the establishment of new factories, mines, and other productive facilities across the country.

Announcing the conference during the 2026 State of the Nation Address (SONA), President Cyril Ramaphosa said government was determined to build on this momentum.

The 2026 conference aims to reinforce a clear narrative to investors: credible reforms drive investor confidence, unlock deployable opportunities, and foster sustainable global partnerships.

Since its launch, the conference has drawn thousands of local and international delegates, positioning South Africa as a competitive and globally relevant investment destination. An estimated 1 250 delegates are expected to attend the 2026 edition in person.

SOUTH AFRICA COMMITS TO TURNING GLOBAL GENDER PLEDGES INTO REAL CHANGE

South Africa has reiterated its commitment to translating global commitments into concrete national programmes that advance the rights, dignity and empowerment of all women and girls.

The commitment was made at the 70th session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW70), held at the headquarters of the United Nations in New York from 9 to 19 March 2026.

South Africa concluded its participation at CSW70 with a renewed pledge to advance gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls through strong multilateral cooperation and decisive national action.

Led by Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities Minister Sindisiwe Chikunga, the South African delegation joined the global community to review progress, share best practices, and reinforce collective efforts to accelerate gender equality.

During the session, South Africa reaffirmed the enduring importance of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action as a cornerstone global framework for advancing women’s rights and achieving substantive equality for women and girls.

The country used the CSW70 platform to highlight several priorities. These included the need for stronger multilateral cooperation to address persistent gender inequalities and to ensure that international commitments translate into tangible improvements in the lives of women and girls.

South Africa also underscored the urgency of advance access to justice, calling for the elimination of discriminatory laws, policies and practices that undermine gender equality and restrict women’s participation in society.

In addition, the delegation emphasised the importance of addressing structural barriers that continue to hinder women’s full economic, political, and social participation. This includes intensified efforts to combat Gender-Based Violence (GBV), promote women’s leadership, and ensure equal access to economic opportunities.

“South Africa [further] reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that the voices and experiences of women from the Global South are reflected in global decision-making processes,” the department reported in a statement on Sunday.

In a significant development, South Africa was appointed to serve in the CSW70 communications work group, reinforcing the country’s growing leadership role in advancing global gender equality.

Acting in its capacity as Interim Chair of the Southern African Development Community (SADC), South Africa also presented a Resolution on Women, the Girl Child and HIV and AIDS on behalf of the bloc’s 16 Member States. The resolution was adopted by consensus during the closing session of CSW70.

“South Africa remains steadfast in its conviction that gender equality is not only a fundamental human right but also a vital foundation for a peaceful, just, and sustainable world,” the department said.

The country has committed to continue to collaborate with the international community to ensure that the outcomes of CSW70 contribute meaningfully to both global and domestic efforts to build inclusive societies where women and girls can thrive.

SADC LEADERS ADDRESS TECHNICAL BARRIERS TO TRADE

On Tuesday, 24 March 2026, Trade, Industry and Competition Deputy Minister Alexandra Abrahams has officially opened the 41st annual meeting of the SADC Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Structures.

The three-day meeting is taking place at the Protea Hotel in Johannesburg.

In line with this year’s Southern African Development Community (SADC) theme, Advancing Industrialisation, Agricultural Transformation, and Energy Transition for a Resilient SADC, Deputy Minister Abrahams highlighted that quality infrastructure is a critical component to facilitating rural development and industrialisation and, in turn, economic growth in the southern region of the African continent.

The Technical Barriers to Regional Trade Annex to the SADC Protocol on Trade provides a framework for the identification and elimination of trade barriers arising from the application of diverging standards, technical regulations or conformity assessment procedures.

Deputy Minister Abrahams said SADC’s growing engagement in international quality infrastructure forums is encouraging, but there must be continued building of scientific, technical, and diplomatic capability to ensure global standards reflect Africa’s realities and support equitable participation.

She said this must be underpinned by deliberate investment in scientific excellence, technical depth, and coordinated diplomatic capability if we are to shape outcomes rather than respond to them.

“To achieve this, we must strengthen our national standards bodies, accreditation systems, and metrology institutes so that they can generate credible data, influence technical committees, and anchor Africa’s positions in evidence.

“This also requires building a cadre of skilled experts and negotiators, who can engage consistently in global standard-setting platforms and ensure that emerging norms, whether in digital trade, green technologies, or advanced manufacturing, are informed by the production realities, development pathways and regulatory capacities of our region,” she emphasised.

Deputy Minister Abrahams said agricultural transformation, in particular, requires a change in how quality infrastructure across the value chain is approached.

“From primary production through to agro-processing and export, farmers and agri-enterprises must increasingly comply with stringent sanitary standards, traceability requirements, and sustainability benchmarks.

“Strengthening testing, certification, and inspection capacity within the agricultural sector is therefore essential to improve food security and productivity, and to unlock access to higher-value regional and international markets,” she said.

As SADC continues to advance the implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area, the consolidation of standards, mutual recognition of conformity assessments, and the strengthening of institutional capability will be decisive.

The Deputy Minister concluded by emphasising that a coordinated, well-resourced, and forward-looking approach to quality infrastructure will be essential if the region is to move towards an integrated, competitive, and resilient economic bloc that delivers sustained growth, expanded market access, and tangible opportunities for its people.

DURBAN SECURES OVER R1.9 BILLION INVESTMENT FOR AFRICA’S FIRST SUPERYACHT INDUSTRY HUB

EThekwini Municipality has achieved a significant milestone in its campaign to position Durban as Africa's premier superyacht destination, following a successful visit to the Yachting Aftersales and Refit Experience (YARE) conference in Viareggio, Italy.

The delegation, comprising Inner City Regeneration Programme Manager Lungelo Buthelezi and Nomalanga Sokhela from the Economic Development Directorate, engaged global shipyards, captains, manufacturers, and investors.

They were supported on the ground by Brian Ngiba, Managing Director of Ziziba Holdings, Navigo's strategic local partner.

A major highlight of the visit was the ceremonial handover of the Letter of Intent (LOI) between eThekwini Municipality and Navigo, custodians of the YARE programme and widely regarded as the global leader in superyacht destination development.

The LOI, signed by eThekwini City Manager Musa Mbhele, was formally presented by Buthelezi to Navigo President Katia Balducci at a high-profile event attended by industry leaders and international media in Italy.

Through this partnership, Navigo has confirmed its commitment to mobilise significant private-sector investment towards Durban's superyacht infrastructure and refit capabilities, with projected investment estimated at over R1.9 billion.

The delegation also extended formal invitations to over 100 superyacht captains and more than 100 global yacht manufacturers to attend the YARE Symposium to be held in Durban in November this year.

Durban will become the first African city ever to host this globally recognised event.

Buthelezi said sentiments from shipyards and captains have been positive, signalling strong confidence in Durban's emerging value proposition and market potential.

‘The anticipated economic impact of this partnership is significant. Projections indicate that more than 2,500 direct jobs could be created by 2030 across marine engineering, refit services, advanced manufacturing, and tourism,” Buthelezi said.

Parallel to this, eThekwini and the Durban University of Technology are advancing plans for Africa's first Professionalised Superyacht Academy, which will train young South Africans in high-demand skills such as welding, marine engineering, and advanced composites fabrication.

Throughout the recent visit, Durban's delegation held strategic engagements with senior executives from leading shipyards.

The city's proposed superyacht precinct, located on a 24-hectare site within the Port of Durban, was presented as a compelling and competitive offering for future investment.

In terms of the Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) Ship Repair Strategy (2025-2035), this site is specifically reserved for the refit market, which includes superyacht servicing and maintenance, a key selling point for international investors.

Reflecting on the historic moment, Buthelezi said that presenting the signed LOI to Navigo's leadership on behalf of the City Manager was an honour.

“The ceremony signalled Durban's readiness and unwavering commitment to establishing a world-class superyacht ecosystem,” Buthelezi said.

Navigo President Katia Balducci affirmed the organisation's confidence in Durban, stating: "This partnership represents the beginning of a historic chapter for Africa's participation in the global superyacht industry. Durban has the vision, the infrastructure, and the commitment to succeed."

Buthelezi said the municipality is currently moving into the next phase of implementation.

“Preparations are underway to host the YARE Symposium in Durban this November, alongside detailed planning for the proposed superyacht precinct.”

INAUGURAL MACAU-SOUTH AFRICA TRADE AND INVESTMENT SEMINAR

The Inaugural Trade and Investment Seminar was held on 18 March 2026 at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Macao. The seminar, hosted by the South African Consulate General in Hong Kong and Macao, focused on strengthening trade and investment relations between South Africa and the region.

The event brought together business leaders and industry experts to explore investment opportunities, trade partnerships, and the promotion of South African products and services. Key discussions included market access, trade regulations, and the potential for collaboration across various sectors such as technology, agriculture, and manufacturing.

The seminar highlighted the commitment of the South African government to enhancing its presence in Asia and building lasting relationships with the Macao and Hong Kong business communities. Mr Leon Naidoo, former diplomat, consultant, and businessman, outlined key trade opportunities between South Africa and Macao.

Speaking on behalf of the consulate, Consul: Political and Economic, Stella Sigcau, noted that the global investment map is being redrawn, with supply chains shifting, energy transitions accelerating, and global dynamics evolving. She emphasised that capital is increasingly seeking stability, investment security, and sustainable returns.

She further highlighted South Africa’s key economic priorities, including infrastructure development at scale, referencing a R1 trillion investment drive aimed at unblocking rail and port systems to ensure efficient movement of goods and predictable logistics for investors. In addition, she pointed to the establishment of a R20 billion per year Transformation Fund to broaden economic participation and support sustainable growth. This, she explained, is complemented by clear sectoral opportunities in critical minerals beneficiation, renewable energy supply chains, agro-processing for export, and digital platforms driven by a young and urbanising population—anchored by a macroeconomic framework committed to credibility and the rule of law.

The discussions were robust, with a clear consensus emerging that both South Africa and Macao are committed to deepening business ties and enhancing bilateral trade and investment opportunities. This includes leveraging the Greater Bay Area and expanding access to African markets through the African Continental Free Trade Area.

Key outcomes of the seminar included plans for a Trade Mission to South Africa, as well as a Trade and Investment Conference to be facilitated by the Consulate later in the year.

South Africa is open, willing, and committed. It is being rewired and repositioned as a competitive investment destination, aligned with President Cyril Ramaphosa’s investment drive.

Let us build pipelines—not just pledges—and translate them into plants, grids, cables, and jobs.

Welcome to South Africa’s next investment chapter.

MANGALISO MTETWA’S “UBUNTU” CURVE SCORES DOUBLE WIN AT GERMAN DESIGN AWARDS

South African architect Mangaliso Mtetwa has claimed a historic double victory at the 2026 German Design Awards for his design of a modular seating system that is inspired by the spirit of Ubuntu, kind to the earth and designed to bring people together.

His sculptural modular bench system, the Ubuntu Curve, claimed top honours in both Excellent Product Design and Furniture and Excellent Product Design – Circular Design, firmly planting South African innovation in the global spotlight.

More than just a seat, the Ubuntu Curve is a modular bench system that embodies the South African philosophy “I am because we are”. It is specifically crafted for public spaces and fosters community and inclusivity through its convergent form while adhering to circular design principles. Proving that furniture can truly bring people together.

It was designed and made in South Africa through the Nyambose Group and embodies the human-centred and regenerative ethos cultivated during his studies.

Constructed from recycled steel and Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)-certified timber, and engineered for modularity and repairability, it reflects the environmental responsibility embedded in his design approach.

For Mtetwa, his double win is inseparable from the mentorship and academic foundation he received at the University of Pretoria, where he studied architecture.

He recalls entering his first-year studio under the guidance of lecturer Dr Nico Botes and quickly realising that architecture is not simply about drafting buildings, but about learning how to ‘see’ – how to interpret space, context and human experience with clarity and intention.

Those early lessons in design theory, spatial intelligence and conceptual rigour became the cornerstone of his professional philosophy.

Following its double award win, the Ubuntu Curve made its international trade fair debut at Ambiente 2026 in Frankfurt, where it was presented to global buyers, media, and design professionals.

The moment marked an important international milestone for Mtetwa, as he showcased a South African design concept to the global design community. The recognition is particularly special for his alma mater, as it highlights the strength of architectural education at UP.

We congratulate Mtetwa on his recent accomplishments that have proven that South African talent and design aren’t just world-class – they are also leading the way toward a more connected, sustainable future.

CAPE TOWN SCHOOL’S ROBOTICS TEAM HEADING TO WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

Thirteen high school students from Cape Town are gearing up to represent South Africa at the FIRST Tech Challenge World Championships in Texas.

The Hyperion Bots team from Parklands College will be competing internationally in less than two months, alongside thousands of the best student robotics teams on the entire planet.

It’s their second year in a row qualifying for Worlds, and they’re only in their second competitive season. These kids are just 14 to 17 years old. Beyond the robots, what they’re doing to expand science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) opportunities for younger students in South Africa is incredible.

The team behind Hyperion Bots might still be school-goers, but they’re serious about robotics. They design, build and program all of their seriously competitive robots from scratch. That includes mechanical design, programming, automation and strategy. On top of that, they manage their own outreach, sponsorship and business operations. Those are skills that most of us adults are still figuring out!

Their mission, ‘Engineering the future, today’ encourages young people to explore robotics, engineering and technology. What’s more, they want to show that it’s possible. Through visiting other schools, mentorship programmes and outreach, they’re opening doors for young South Africans who may never have thought a career in tech was possible for someone like them.

“Seeing is believing. Maybe if they can see it, they will know they can do it,” says team captain Isabella Ankiah.

One of their main initiatives is #FIRSTLikeAGirl. It empowers young girls to overcome cultural pressures and follow their dreams in science, technology, engineering and mathematics!

The team runs regular social media campaigns and webinars spotlighting real women in STEM, including CEOs, directors, trainers, and inspiring individuals from all kinds of backgrounds. The whole point is to show young girls that you can be fun, feminine, brilliant and a total leader in science and technology. It’s not just for the boys or for people with privilege, but for anyone who dreams it.

The Hyperion Bots are also running a professional development programme, which is a first for South Africa. It’s focused on training 48 local coaches and mentors to equip community leaders and educators to start and run their own robotics teams, teach real engineering skills, and create inclusive spaces where the next generation of STEM professionals can grow.

One team sparks dozens of coaches, who then reach hundreds of kids. That’s the kind of ripple effect that we love to see. And now, they’re heading to the Worlds for a second time. They really put in the work to get there.

At the South African National Championships held at the Amazon offices in Cape Town, they went up against the country’s top 23 robotics teams and came in third place overall in the Robot Games.

They also walked away with an Inspire Award, the single highest honour in the competition. It recognises excellence across engineering design, robot performance, innovation, documentation, teamwork AND community impact. Earlier in the season, they’d already won the Inspire Award at the Regional Championships too, competing as a Finalist Alliance team.

Out of hundreds of teams competing in the FIRST Tech Challenge around the world, making it to the World Championships is important. Doing it twice, in your first two seasons, as a team of high schoolers, is something to be so proud of. In both seasons, the team has been led by a girl.

“Being a captain has nothing to do with being a girl. Leadership is not defined by gender. I am proud to lead, proud to represent women in STEM and proud to challenge every stereotype that says we cannot. I do not lead to prove we belong. I lead, knowing we always have,” says Isabella.

Hyperion Bots heads to Houston at the end of April 2026. South Africa will be cheering them on every step of the way. And somewhere out there, a young girl is going to read this story and start to believe that she can do it too.

ONLY AFRICAN RESTAURANT IN TIME’S “WORLD’S GREATEST PLACES” IS IN CAPE TOWN

Amura by Ángel León at the Mount Nelson has been named one of “TIME Magazine’s World’s Greatest Places for 2026, making it the only restaurant on the African continent to receive the honour.

Amura opened almost three months ago and is the first restaurant outside of Spain from Chef Ángel León. Known internationally as El Chef del Mar (the Chef of the Sea), León is the Andalusian force behind Aponiente (three Michelin Stars) and Alevante (two Michelin Stars), both of which have made him one of the most pioneering figures in contemporary gastronomy.

Back home in Spain, he built his name doing things with ocean ingredients that most chefs wouldn’t think to try, treating the sea the way others treat a farm and finding flavour and texture in places most people had written off entirely.

“Here, a new continent becomes his canvas. Local kingklip is served fresh with a Spanish pilpil enriched with plankton; abalone, deeply tied to South Africa’s coast, is paired with an emulsion of Gordal olives; and shrimp toast, inflected with Durban’s curry-laden maritime heritage, has struck a chord with local diners,” shared TIME in its review.

The Mother City gave León’s brilliance a new spot to land within the iconically pink walls of the Mount Nelson, inspired by the meeting of our Atlantic and Indian oceans.

Importantly, the menu is built on respect for the ocean and for the communities that have long drawn their lives from the sea.

“At Amura we try to tell a different story about the sea that is rooted in nature, time and respect for the ocean. To see this vision recognised by TIME among the world’s greatest places is both humbling and deeply exciting for our entire team,” says Carlos León, Business Manager of Amura and brother of Chef Ángel León.

TIME’s annual list is compiled through nominations from its international network of correspondents and contributors, with a focus on places offering new and genuinely exciting experiences.

To land on it just months after opening speaks to the magic happening at Amura.

“From the beginning, Amura was envisioned as a restaurant that would bring together Chef Ángel León’s pioneering marine cuisine with the remarkable ingredients and coastal heritage of the Cape. To see this vision acknowledged on a global stage is a proud moment for us all,” says Patrick Fisher, General Manager of the Mount Nelson, A Belmond Hotel, Cape Town.

CAMDEN MCLELLAN CLAIMS FIRST GRAND PRIX VICTORY

South Africa has a new reason to celebrate on the global motorsport stage, with Camden McLellan claiming his maiden MX2 Grand Prix victory and the coveted red plate in Spain.

The South African rider secured his first-ever MX2 Grand Prix overall victory at the MXGP of Andalucia in Almonte, Spain, on 22 March 2026, achieving a personal milestone and also a historic maiden GP win for the Triumph Racing Factory Team. With a clinical 2-1 moto scorecard, McLellan claimed the overall victory and the red plate, taking the lead in the championship standings heading into round three.

It was a weekend where everything clicked. From the opening sessions, McLellan looked composed and in control, carrying that form into race day where it mattered most. The first moto demanded everything from him, with a push right to the final corner in a race that tested both his pace and determination, while the second moto showed a more calculated approach, where every move was measured and executed with precision.

Reflecting on the result, McLellan shared just how much this moment means to him and the team around him.

“It’s been an incredible GP here in Spain with my first-ever overall win, and also a first overall victory for Triumph, which is a really special feeling. I felt solid throughout the whole week and carried that into the weekend, so it all came together when it mattered. I can’t thank the team enough! We’ve got a great bike and a fantastic group of people around us, and this result is a reflection of everyone’s hard work. I’m really happy to now have the red plate and I’m excited for the rest of the season.”

Speaking to Good Things Guy, his excitement was unmistakable, but so was the gratitude for the journey that got him here.

“This is what dreams are made of! We put in the hard work over the winter, and it’s all come together now. This is what I’ve been chasing. I got my first pole position on Saturday, so I knew that the speed was there and then just went through the motions today. The first moto was a little chaotic and I had to push right till the last corner. The second race was more calculated. I thought everything through; there was no risk, and everything went to plan. It’s awesome coming away with the Red plate. I have a great team backing me, I can’t thank my family and fans and all the people that have supported me and believed in me. This one is for them.”

For South Africans watching from home, this win carries something special. It’s not just about a podium or a trophy; it’s about seeing one of our own rise to the top of a global stage and lead the championship against the best in the world. It’s about the hours, the sacrifices, the belief and the people behind the scenes who helped make this moment possible.

LIV GOLF SOUTH AFRICA WAS THE BEST SHOW IN GOLF - DEAN BURMESTER

Despite coming up short by a single stroke in the team competition, Southern Guards player Dean Burmester described the inaugural LIV Golf South Africa as the greatest week of his life.

The Southern Guards held a big lead which ballooned to nine during the early stages of the final round only to be caught by the Crushers, led by Bryson DeChambeau, who won the individual tournament, and then passed with one hole to play.

Ultimately, the Crushers won by a single shot over the home favourites.

It may have been a crushing finish for the South African quartet of Burmester, Louis Oosthuizen, Charl Schwartzel and Branden Grace, but it would remain a week in the history books for the Rainbow Nation.

"I mean, obviously, a little gutted we didn’t get it done. But I'm proud to be South African,” said Burmester.

“South Africa showed up, and we put on the greatest show in golf.

“I think it's clear to see the greatest fans in the world, and they came out in their thousands, and they were behind us all the way, and we threw everything at it, but the Crushers did an amazing job today, and they managed to pip us by one.”

Despite the disappointment at the end, it was a truly unique experience, explained Burmester.

“That's the nature of the beast, but we're going to be back next year and we're going to be stronger and we're going to be ready to tackle this thing again.

“This was the greatest week of my life. Honestly, collectively, it has to be the greatest four days I've had on a golf course, the most fun.

“I didn't get down on myself once, which is something I tend to do, and it was impossible. Everybody shouting my name and I was just smiling, telling jokes and shouting crazy things out. I've never experienced that in my life. I know a lot of American guys might have [in the USA], but I've never experienced anything like that.”

CONNOR ESTERHUIZEN'S PYROTECHNICS DRIVES PROTEAS ROOKIES TO SERIES VICTORY IN NEW ZEALAND

The queue may be a long one, but Connor Esterhuizen has certainly added his name to the list to be considered for the Proteas wicket-keeper/batter role in white-ball cricket after leading his team to a 3-2 series victory over the Black Caps on Wednesday, 25 March 2026.

Esterhuizen has been the standout performer over the course of the five T20Is against New Zealand.

The 24-year-old not only topped the run-scoring charts across both teams with an aggregate of 200 runs at an average of 50, but the way he set the pulses racing at the Hagley Oval in Christchurch would stand him in good stead in the future.

His innings of 75 in 33 balls, which included five boundaries and a half dozen sixes, resuscitated the Proteas and ensured a total that was out of the Black Caps’ reach. It was thrilling stuff by a young man determined to show that he can take the step up when the big boys inevitably return.

Crucially for the Proteas, there were solid contributions from Wiaan Mulder (31 off 29 balls), Rubin Hermann (39 off 31 balls) and Dian Forrester (21* off 13 balls) in support of Esterhuizen as the visitors totalled a stealthy 187/4.

Batting coach Ashwell Prince would certainly have been pleased with the string of partnerships that yielded 55 runs for the second wicket, 49 for the third, and 61 off only 27 balls for the fourth that he had been calling for throughout the series.

But it still required a decent effort with the ball on arguably the best batting surface of the series.

Seamer Gerald Coetzee set the tone upfront with an economical two-over spell that allowed his new-ball partner Mulder to reap the rewards before Ottniel Baartman (2/33) picked up his customary wicket in the Powerplay when he had the dangerous Dylan Cleaver caught by Jason Smith in the covers.

Smith, who had earlier shelled a chance, made further amends when he ran out Tim Robinson with a smart throw from the boundary.

The Proteas continued to eat into New Zealand's batting unit with timely strikes, none more so than when Baartman held his composure amidst the Black Caps’ onslaught when he had South African-born Bevan Jacobs (36 off 19 balls) caught on by the boundary by Forrester.

From there on the Black Caps had no way back, with Coetzee (2/21) returning at full throttle to close out the match, and ultimately the series, with a couple of scalps at the backend.

SCOREBOARD

South Africa: 187/4 (Esterhuizen 75, Hermann 39, Sears 2/37)

New Zealand: 154/8 (Jacobs 36, Coetzee 2/21, Baartman 2/33, Mulder 2/28)

South Africa won by 33 runs, win series 3-2

SWIMMING SOUTH AFRICA CELEBRATES BIG WINS IN THE POOL

It’s been a strong showing for Swimming South Africa, with standout performances both on the international stage, and back home, and Kaylene Corbett, Pieter Coetzé and Jessica Thompson are right at the centre of it.

Experienced breaststroke swimmer Kaylene Corbett delivered a brilliant performance to secure a bronze medal in the 50m breaststroke on the opening day of the China Swimming Open. In a high-intensity final, Corbett touched the wall in 31.59 seconds, edging out American swimmer Alex Walsh by just 0.03 seconds in a thrilling finish.

The race itself was electric, headlined by China’s Tang Qianting, who stormed to gold in a blistering 29.44. But behind that dominant performance, Corbett showed exactly why she remains one of South Africa’s best swimmers. Keeping her composure under pressure to secure a well-earned podium spot.

Not forgetting Pieter Coetzé, who delivered a stunning performance to claim gold in the 50m backstroke, stopping the clock at 24.83 seconds. This also secures his ticket to the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

Back home, South African swimming was also making headlines. On the very same week, 18-year-old Jessica Thompson made waves of her own, breaking both the South African and African records in the women’s 50m backstroke at the SA National Youth Championships in Gqeberha.

Together, these performances paint an exciting picture for what’s to come this year. This week alone proves that there’s plenty more to look forward to in the pool for Team South Africa.

SOUTH AFRICAN TEEN GIANNA PASCOAL ACCELERATES ONTO GLOBAL MOTORSPORT STAGE

Gianna Pascoal is South Africa’s sole representative in the 2026 More Than Equal Driver Development Programme, racing her way towards Formula 4.

South African teenager Gianna Pascoal is stepping into a new phase of her racing career, with a global opportunity that places her among the most promising young drivers in the sport.

The 15-year-old South African has been selected as one of just five drivers worldwide for the More Than Equal Driver Development Programme. The international initiative is focused on fast-tracking female drivers into Formula racing. It’s a big moment and one that puts her firmly among the sport’s most exciting young prospects.

She’s also the only South African in this year’s intake, joining a small group of drivers from Europe, Britain and Australia. The programme is known for being highly competitive and for opening doors to the next level of racing.

She only started karting at 11, a bit later than most, but quickly found her rhythm. Within a few seasons, she was already competing at the front of national ROK and Rotax series, making a name for herself as one to watch. Since then, she’s taken her talent overseas, representing South Africa at events like Champions of the Future, the FIA Academy Trophy and FIA Arrive and Drive. From Europe to the Middle East, she’s been building experience against some of the best young drivers out there.

“I’ve been lucky to discover motorsport, and the biggest thing for me has been learning quickly. Every time I’m on track, I try to learn something new and find another tenth of a second. That’s what I enjoy the most — pushing myself and seeing how much faster I can go.”

Lately her schedule shows just how much things are moving. Alongside local races at Killarney Raceway, she’s also spent time in Vienna at a high-performance training camp designed to prepare drivers for the demands of Formula racing.

Now the next step is in motion as she is set to make her move into MSA Formula 4, officially stepping out of karting and into single-seater competition.

Her coach, Wesleigh Orr of WORR Motorsports, believes she’s more than ready.

“Her work ethic and race intelligence are at a level we typically see in far more experienced drivers. She absorbs information incredibly quickly and translates it into lap time. She has all the ingredients to climb the single-seater ladder, and we can’t wait to see what she achieves next.”

International experiences are already under her belt and a big move into Formula 4 ahead. Now with this opportunity, Gianna Pascoal is building her career one race at a time.

BAFANA BAFANA, BANYANA BANYANA'S 2026/2027 AWAY JERSEYS UNVEILED

The South African Football Association (Safa), in partnership with adidas, has unveiled the official 2026/2027 Away Jerseys for both Bafana Bafana and Banyana Banyana.

The 2026/2027 Away Jersey makes a powerful statement in iconic green and gold — a colour combination deeply rooted in South African sporting identity.

Designed with a structured collar featuring refined white and gold trim, the Away kit blends heritage with sophistication. The collar detailing nods to prestige and progression, symbolising the elevation of South African football across both the men’s and women’s games.

The green base represents resilience and growth, while the white and gold accents signal ambition, a reminder that South Africa continues to shine on football’s biggest stages.

Both jerseys have been designed for equal representation of Bafana Bafana and Banyana Banyana, reinforcing adidas and SAFA’s shared commitment to elevating the women’s and men’s games in tandem.

“While we honour the past generation of the 60s to the 80s who could not represent South Africa, our partner adidas is bringing the design into the future, as an ode to both the elevation of the jersey but equally the evolution of diski which is seeing us shine within global tournaments with our distinct culture and colour. We are hoping for even greater performances and success considering this jersey is built using adidas’ latest performance technology, which as a former Banyana Banyana player I can attest to,” said Safa CEO, Lydia Monyepao.

“This Away Jersey reflects a timeless elegance, distinctly showcasing the adidas trefoil logo, synonymous with sporting culture and excellence. 2026 is significant as it represents the first year that adidas will introduce this logo to global away federations jerseys across the world during the World Cup. This is in keeping with the sophisticated style direction of these jerseys,” notes Tom Brown, senior brand director for adidas South Africa.

“Whilst the styling is distinctly elevated, the elite functionality of the jersey remains unrivalled. The garment is constructed using adidas’ latest performance technology and is engineered for elite competition. Lightweight materials, advanced moisture management, and breathable construction ensure the athlete can perform with confidence under pressure. Every stitch reflects progression. Every detail tells a story.”

SOUTH AFRICA’S FREEDIVING STARS MAKE WAVES IN DURBAN, SET SIGHTS ON BUDAPEST

From national records to world rankings, South African freedivers impress at the Durban championships and gear up for Budapest in June.

Big performances, national records and plenty of excitement. The 2026 AIDA South Africa Pool National Championships made quite a splash in Durban this past weekend.

Held at the Rachel Finlayson Pool, the event may have featured a small field of just six athletes, but what it lacked in numbers, it made up for in energy, support and standout results. Across the four pool disciplines, athletes delivered an impressive 15 personal bests.

Leading the charge was Bevin Reynolds, who dominated the women’s category and rewrote the record books along the way. Reynolds broke three of the four South African national records and now sits third in the world in the Dynamic Bifin (DYNB) discipline, thanks to a remarkable 233m performance. With the AIDA Pool World Championships in Budapest coming up in June, she’s firmly positioned as one to watch on the global stage.

Angelique van der Hoogen, Secretary of AIDA South Africa, was extremely proud, saying this indicates that they can compete against the best of the best.

“This performance is a clear indication of the level South African athletes are capable of achieving on the international stage. We are incredibly proud of Bevin and the wider athlete group, and we are excited to see what lies ahead at Worlds.”

The competition also had an international flavour, with Mauritian athlete Charles Ducray Giblot making his mark by breaking all four of his country’s national records.

While KwaZulu-Natal remains a smaller hub for the sport locally, the championship proved that talent runs deep. Take freediving; it continues to grow in popularity, combining physical endurance, mental strength and precision in a truly unique way.

With five South African athletes set to represent the country at the upcoming World Championships, the momentum is building. And now all eyes turn to June as they prepare to take on the world stage in Budapest.
