Statement on the Joint Government - Tribute Magazine - SABC Africa Day Celebrations

President Thabo Mbeki will deliver a keynote address at the Joint Government - Tribute Magazine - SABC TV Africa Day Celebration function on Friday 24 May at the Sandton Convention Centre, Johannesburg.

The function which is held annually to mark Africa Day comes in the wake of preparations for the forthcoming launch of the African Union scheduled for Durban in July 2002. Africa Day marks the day of the formation of the OAU in 1963 to assist the continent in the process of decolonisation and the struggle against apartheid.

Among the highlights of the evening will the viewing of the audio-visual on "Peace, Prosperity and Development for the African Century" which will feature footage of the first OAU meeting in 1963, speeches by the late Kwame Nkrumah, Julius Nyerere, Oliver Tambo and former President Nelson Mandela.

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma, assisted by sponsors of the function, will present 10 categories of awards for excellence in the following areas: black economic empowerment; leadership; sports; business; health; science and technology; entertainment and women and the Premier Award.

Entertainment for the evening will include performance by the Soweto Strings Quartet, Vusi Mahlasela, Africa Mama’s and BuskAid. The function will begin 18h30-for 19h00.

The Joint Government-Tribute Magazine-SABC TV function is part of a nationwide Africa Day celebrations that will be held in the various provinces of the country as an integral part of popularising the AU and NEPAD.
