Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Aziz Pahad to Pay Official Visit to the Republic of Angola from 25-26 July 2002

The Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Aziz Pahad will pay an official visit to the Republic of Angola from Thursday, 25th August - Friday, 26th July 2002 during which political discussions, with the Angolan Minister of External Relations, Joao de Miranda, will be held.

Discussions will focus on bilateral political and diplomatic relations; practical mechanisms for the implementation of the bilateral relations between Angola and South Africa; assistance to alleviate the humanitarian crisis in the country; and Angola's role as the incoming Chair of SADC.

Since sub regional groupings are the building blocks of NEPAD, South Africa and Angola, as Chair of the African Union and SADC respectively, must work closely together. In addition, the Deputy Minister will be briefed on developments since the ceasefire agreement signed in April 2002 and South Africa's support of this process.

While in Angola, the Deputy Minister will also meet with the MPLA Secretary-General, Dr Joao Lourenco and the Secretary for External Relations, Paulo Jorge.
