Minister Dlamini Zuma Arrives in Beirut for the Arab League Summit

Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma arrived on Monday, 25th March 2002 in Beirut, capital of Lebanon ahead of the 14th Arab League Summit scheduled for 27th-28th March 2002.

Minister Dlamini Zuma was invited to the Arab League Summit in an unprecedented move to represent President Thabo Mbeki in his capacity as Chairperson of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM).

Minister Dlamini-Zuma, who is expected to address the opening session of the Arab Summit sharing the platform with United Nations Secretary General, Kofi Annan and the Head of the Organisation of Islamic Conference, Dr Abdel Belkeziz on Wednesday, 27th March 2002, is expected to call for an end to the Arab-Israeli conflict, brief the Summit on the World Sustainable Development Conference and call for greater Afro-Arab co-operation.

Minister Dlamini Zuma will hold bilateral discussions with a number of Arab leaders in the context of the mandate South Africa received as chair of NAM to find a just and lasting solution to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.
