Update on South Africans Affected by
the Bomb Blast in Bali, Indonesia
The South African government reiterates its sadness,
shock and outrage at the bomb blast that left over 190
people dead and scores of others wounded in Bali Indonesia
on Saturday 12 October.
In this regard, the government extends its heartfelt
condolences to the government and people of Indonesia,
members of the bereaved families and wishes those wounded
a speedy recovery.
Regarding the South Africans affected by the bomb blast
the following update has been received from the South
African mission in Jakarta:
Morne Viljoen has now been transferred to the
Royal Darwin hospital in Australia, having suffered
2nd degree burns to at least 40% of his body.
Missing South Africans:
The South African mission in Jakarta has sent a team
of two officers to Bali to assist South Africans that
are in Bali and may have been affected by the blast
including those reported missing.
The South African embassy officials now in Bali, are
currently liaising with Immigration Authorities in Bali
in an effort to trace the reported missing South Africans.
Part of the problem is that not all South Africans visiting
Bali at the time had advised the South African mission
in Jakarta of their presence in the area.
IDENTIFICATION PROCESS OF VICTIMS
The South African mission in Jakarta has also advised
that some of victims affected by the blast cannot be
identified. Accordingly, the Indonesian Government will
be airlifting the unidentified bodies to Australia for
DNA testing to assist with the identification process.
