Statement on the Withdrawal of Rwandan
Forces from the Democratic Republic of Congo
The South African Ambassador to the Democratic Republic
of Congo (DRC), Sisa Ngombane will be participating
in a ceremony in Kindu, DRC to mark the first withdrawal
of Rwandan troops from the territory of DRC, today,
Tuesday 17 September 2002.
The withdrawal is taking place in the context of the
UN/South African sponsored Agreement signed between
President Paul Kagame and Joseph Kabila in Pretoria
on 30 July 2002 and follows the recent meeting on the
fringes of the UNGA 57 between Presidents Mbeki, Bush,
Kagame and Kabila in New York.
In this context, President Paul Kagame announced in
the UN Security Council that Rwanda will begin the withdrawal
of troops from DRC between the week of 16-22 September
2002. It is thus anticipated that this movement of troops
will last for the next ten days from today, 16 September
2002.
The South African Government welcomes these developments
as a step in the right direction that should give impetus
to efforts aimed at bringing about peace and stability
to the DRC.
