Statement on South Africa's Depositing
of the Declaration of Acceptance on Private International
Law
The Ambassador of the Republic of South Africa in The
Hague, the Netherlands, Ambassador Priscilla Jana, will
on Thursday, 14 February 2002, deposit, on behalf of
Minister Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma, a Declaration of Acceptance
of the Statute of the Hague Conference on Private International
Law.
Ambassador Jana will deposit the Declaration at the
Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the Netherlands.
This day is a landmark in the annals of our history
when South Africa's membership to this inter-governmental
organisation, whose objective is harmonisation of legal
systems of the world, is definite.
South Africa was accepted as member of the Hague Conference
in August 2000 and had to deposit a formal instrument
of acceptance to make its membership definite.
The Hague Conference on Private International Law aims
at building bridges between various legal systems and
a centre of excellence for international judicial and
administrative co-operation in the area of private law,
especially in the field of protection of the family
and children of civil procedure and commercial law.
South Africa is a State Party to the Hague Convention
on International Child Abduction.
