Statement on the South African Observer Team for the Lesotho General Elections

In response to a request from the Chairperson of the SADC Extended Troika, President Chissano for South Africa to send a team of observers for the forthcoming elections in Lesotho scheduled for Saturday 25 May 2002, President Thabo Mbeki has agreed to send a team of South Africans to join the SADC observer mission to Lesotho.

These include Prof. Itumeleng Mosala (an academic); Pasco Dyani (Cosatu); Ms. Nthabiseng Nkosi (Africa Institute); Ms. Inca Mars (MP) who will be supported by a secretarial team of the Department of Foreign Affairs comprising Tselani Mokuena; Roberto Gomes and Greta Buys.

The SADC observer mission is expected to submit a report, upon the conclusion of the elections, to the Chairperson, President Joachim Chissano.
