Treaty Establishing the African Economic Community Relating
to the Pan-African Parliament
OAU PRESS RELEASE NO. 067/2002
The Republic of South Africa today signed the Protocol
on the Treaty Establishing the African Economic Community
Relating to the Pan-African Parliament.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs of South Africa, H.E.
Mrs Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma signed on behalf of her Government.
Welcoming the signing by South Africa, the Secretary
General of the OAU, Mr Amara Essy, stated that Africans
cannot build a viable African Union without taking the
peoples of the Continent along, of whom the Pan-African
Parliament represents. Mr Essy expressed the hope that
other Member States of the OAU would follow suit to
sign the Protocol, as well as ratify it in order for
it to come into force soon.
South Africa is the 21st member State of the OAU to
sign the Protocol on Pan-African Parliament. So far,
only three (3) Member States have ratified.
