Statement on Meeting Between Deputy Minister Aziz Pahad and Special Envoy from the Government of Sudan

The Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Aziz Pahad held talks with a Special Envoy from the Government of Sudan, Mahdi Ibrahim, Minister of Information and Communications, on Monday, 16 September 2002, regarding the recent peace negotiations held at Machakos, Kenya, between the Government of Sudan and the Sudanese Peoples' Liberation Movement/Army (SPLM/A).

In addition, the Minister will deliver a special message from President Bashir to President Mbeki. The Acting President, Deputy President Zuma will receive the message.

Deputy Minister Pahad expressed his deep concern regarding the suspension of these negotiations held under the auspices of the Inter-Governmental Authority for Development (IGAD), aimed at bringing about an end to this 19-year old conflict. The breakthrough in the peace talks opened up tremendous possibilities for the Sudanese people and Africa generally. A peaceful Sudan will make an important contribution to NEPAD.

The Deputy Minister therefore expressed his deep concern at the recent attack on the town of Torit in Southern Sudan, and called for a cessation of hostilities and the return to the negotiating table.
