WSSD: Renewable Energy Round Table Seminar, 28 August 2002, Johannesburg

The Minister of Minerals and Energy, Ms Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka is hosting the Renewable Energy Round table Seminar on Wednesday, 28 August 2002 from
9:00 to 14:00 at Eskom Conference Centre in Midrand.

The Seminar will focus on the current status of renewable energy around the globe, barriers to the implementation of renewable energy technologies and responses as well as comments from panellists , which will be used to inform the World summit on Sustainable Development. It is envisaged
that the seminar will establish useful lessons in and add impetus to the implementation of renewable energy at a global level. Dr Habtetsion from Kenya and Prof. Davidson from EDRC will be providing the African perspective on Renewable Energy.

The conference comes at a time when the Department of Minerals and Energy has just released the draft White Paper on the Promotion of Renewable Energy and Clean Energy Development in South Africa. The draft White Paper incorporates a framework of financial, legal and institutional
mechanisms to support the Renewable Energy programme. This will enable the environment to provide a climate of certainty about Government's intentions for both international investors and potential stakeholders in the South African Renewable Energy Industry.

Minister Mlambo-Nguka will also launch the Solar Dish Sterling at 12:30 at the Development Bank of South Africa (DBSA). The Solar Dish Sterling is a joint venture between the DBSA and Eskom and it has been endorsed by the
Department of Minerals and Energy.
