WSSD: Statement on Marches Planned for Saturday

The South African Government is satisfied that discussions around the route for marches planned for this Saturday has led to an amicable and acceptable outcome for all concerned.

We have said all along that we recognise and support the right to demonstrate and freedom of expression. Our prime concern is the safety and security of everybody, including demonstrators.
South Africa has a rich history of demonstration which played a significant role in achieving the freedoms we enjoy today.

To show our commitment to finding a solution we proposed an alternative route for the march, which starts in Alexandra and ends in Sandton. This proactive and accommodating approach we took is evidence of our commitment to the democratic principles that exist in our country.

Seventeen applications for marches were received and all have now been approved.
Once again, we have proved that as South Africans, we are able to negotiate problems and resolve them amicably.
