Statement on the Arrest of a South African in Zimbabwe

The Department of Foreign Affairs confirms the arrest, today Monday 19 August, of a South African farmer, Mr. Crawdford Von Abo in terms of Section 8 of the Land Reacquisition Act ot the Zimbabwean laws in Mweneyi, Zimbabwe.

According to Mr. Jerry Ndou, the South African High Commissioner to Zimbabwe, Mr. Von Abo was apparently arrested during a visit to his farm in Mweneyi on Monday afternoon.

Mr. Ndou has given his assurance that Mr. Von Abo will be accorded the normal consular services provided to all South Africans arrested abroad. This will include visitation by officials from the South African High Commission, ensure the family is informed of the arrest, proper legal representation and see to the welfare of Mr. Von Abo.

The South African High Commission will remain in constant liaison with the Zimbabwean authorities to find and early resolutions of the matter.
