Statement on the Imposition of Targeted Sanctions on Zimbabwe

The South African Government finds it regrettable and unfortunate that the European Union chose to impose targeted sanctions against Zimbabwe.

We believe that sanctions will not achieve the intended result. On the contrary they may further compound the situation.

The people of Zimbabwe need to speak through the ballot box. In this regard, the South African Government calls on the International Community to spare neither strength nor effort in assisting the people of Zimbabwe to create of a climate conducive to free and fair elections.

In this context a further number of South African observers will leave the country on Wednesday, 20th February 2002 in pursuance of this objective. Parliamentary, SADC and OAU observers will further add to the momentum of creating a climate for free and fair elections in Zimbabwe.
