Statement by Deputy Minister A Pahad on the Accreditation of South African Journalists to the Presidential Elections in Zimbabwe

The Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Aziz Pahad is glad to announce that the South African High Commissioner to Zimbabwe, Mr Jeremiah Ndou, and the South African Observer Mission (SAOM) to the Presidential Elections in Zimbabwe, today, Wednesday 20th February 2002, met with the Zimbabwean Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Information and Publicity, Mr George Charamba.

The meeting agreed that the Zimbabwean government will consider favourably applications for accreditation by South African journalists to cover the Presidential Elections.

Both parties said that they believe that the SA media should be given access to the Electoral Process in a free way as it is vital for the success of building democracy and informing the public and the world at large without hindrance.

The South African Government welcomes the decision by the Zimbabwean Government, as adding to the momentum of creating a climate for free and fair elections.
