Response by the South African Government to Allegations of Non-Assistance by Mr Crawford Lindsay von Abo

Regarding the arrest of Mr Crawford Lindsay von Abo by Zimbabwean authorities, the Department of Foreign Affairs wishes to place the following on record:

The Department confirms receipt of a letter from the Presidency by Mr von Abo.
The letter was immediately brought to the attention of the South African High Commissioner to Zimbabwe, Mr Jerry Ndou.

The matter was raised with the Zimbabwean authorities, including the Principal of Lands.
On the eve of his departure, Mr von Abo alerted the Department of his intention to travel to Zimbabwe.

His intention was immediately communicated to the South African High Commission.
After his arrest, the Mission was in contact with his family and the Zimbabwean authorities.
Upon his release on bail, officials of the Mission visited Mr von Abo in the Masvingo Province.
