Statement on the Deployment of 50 South African Observers to the Zimbabwe Elections

The South African Observer Mission (SAOM) has deployed 50 of its observers in all the 10 provinces of Zimbabwe. The SAOM and other observer missions were briefed by the Electoral Supervisory Commission of Zimbabwe on the state of voting preparedness on March 9 &10 as well as the counting process on March 11, 2002.

Given the briefing by the Electoral Supervisory Commission, we hope that the polling on the set days will proceed smoothly and in compliance with all the statutory requirements and within a peaceful and enabling environment.

SAOM Observers will observe the process in no less than 500 polling stations through out the country as well as the counting process in a number of counting centers.

We encourage and urge all Zimbabweans who are registered and entitled to vote to come in their numbers and cast their secret vote.
