Statement on the Inauguration of the
Zimbabwe Inter-Party Dialogue, Harare, 8 April 2002
1. The Inter-Party dialogue initiated by Presidents
Olusegun Obasanjo of Nigeria and Thabo Mbeki of South
Africa, authorised and supported by President Robert
Mugabe and Mr. Morgan Tsvangarai, commenced today, 8th
April 2002, following its inauguration at the Zimbabwe
Senate Chambers in Harare.
2. The process which aims at reconciling the polarised
polity and reaching a consensus on the way forward began
on 22 March 2002, with preliminary consultations by
Nigerian and South African Presidents Special Envoys
and facilitators, with the leaderships of Zanu-PF and
the MDC. The commitment and will of the leaderships
of both parties to a sustained dialogue have culminated
in its official launching today.
3. The opening session was addressed by Professor Adedeji
under the Chairmanship of Mr. Kgalema Motlanthe, facilitators
and Co-Chairpersons of the dialogue, Professor Welshman
Ncube, Secretary-General of the Movement for Democratic
Change (MDC) and Comrade Patrick Chinamasa, Zanu-PF
Secretary for Legal Affairs.
4. The Inter-Party Dialogue was adjourned until 9.00
a.m. on Wednesday,10th April, 2002.
