South African Government Statement on the Earthquake in Algeria

President Thabo Mbeki, today - Thursday, 22 May 2003 - conveyed on behalf of the government and people of South Africa, his most profound and heartfelt condolences to President Abdelaziz Bouteflika and the government and peoples of Algeria for the lost of lives, injury to scores of others and destruction of infrastructure following the earthquake that rocked the city of Algiers on Wednesday, 21 May 2003.

"It was with profound sadness that we received the news of the devastating earthquake which rocked Algiers, Bouneldes and surrounding areas on 21 May 2003, which resulted in over five hundred people being killed, over six thousand injured and the destruction of numerous buildings in Algiers."

"Please accept our sincere condolences on behalf of the Government and peoples of South Africa and be assured that our thoughts and prayers are with the families of those who lost their loved ones and wish those wounded a speedy recovery."

The South African Government avails itself to assist the Government and people's of Algeria within the available resources at our disposal.
