Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma to Chair Selection Panel for Commissioners and Deputy Commissioners of the African Union

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma, as chair of the Council of Ministers of the African Union, will depart South Africa on Monday, 7 April 2003 for Addis Ababa to chair a panel to select Commissioners and Deputy Commissioners of the African Union.
As written in the Constitutive Act of the African Union,


1. "There shall be established a Commission of the Union, which shall be the Secretariat of the Union.
2. The Commission shall be composed of the Chairman, his or her deputy or deputies and the Commissioners. They shall be assisted by the necessary staff for the smooth functioning of the Commission.
3. The structure, functions and regulations of the Commission shall be determined by the Assembly."

There will be Commissioners for the following portfolios:
· Peace and Security (Conflict Prevention, Management and Resolution)
· Political Affairs (Human Rights, Democracy, Good Governance, Electoral Institutions, Civil Society Organisations, Humanitarian Affairs and Refugees)
· Social Affairs (Health, Population, Migration, Labour, Social Affairs and Culture)
· Human Resources, Science and Technology (Education, Youth, Human Resources, Science and Technology)
· Trade and Industry (Trade, Industry, Customs and Immigration Matters)
· Rural Economy and Agriculture (Rural Economy, Agriculture, Environment and Natural Resources)
· Economic Affairs (Economic Integration, Monetary Affairs, Private Sector Development, Investment and Resource Mobilisation)

The list of recommended candidates will be presented to the Heads of State at the Summit of the African Union in July 2003 to be hosted by Mozambique.
