President Thabo Mbeki to Lead AU Delegation to Comoros

President Thabo Mbeki, accompanied by Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma, will lead an AU delegation of countries of the Region on a visit to the Comoros on Saturday 20 December 2003. The visit is part of efforts by the AU to help the Comorian people find a speedy resolution to their current political challenges.

The AU has charged South Africa, Magadascar, Mauritius, Tanzania and Mozambique under the leadership of President Thabo Mbeki to assist the Comorean people in removing obstacles leading to the holding of free and fair parliamentary elections for both the islands and the Comorean Union as a whole.

A number of visits by the AU Ministerial delegation led by Minister Dlamini Zuma have taken place and progress made towards a return to a constitutional order. In this regard, free and fair elections for the President of the Union of Comoros and the Presidents of the autonomous islands took place under international supervision.

Several issues such as the division of power, the budget, security, customs and tax revenue still needs to be ironed out with a view to creating a climate conducive for the holding of free and fair parliamentary elections.
