President Mbeki Pays Tribute as the South African Cricket Team Bows out of the World Cup

South Africans will be disappointed at the outcome of the Cricket match last night - beaten by the rain. But the show goes on, as the remaining teams battle it out - and with African hopes bloodied but not totally bowed.

Our players fought back but were beaten by the elements. As host country, we shall watch the continuing tournament with great enthusiasm, and we call on all South Africans to maintain their level of interest. We congratulate the organizers and players and above all the spectators on such a marvellous, colourful spectacle of open-air skill on display for the peoples of the world.

The success of the world cup has confirmed South Africa as an ideal venue for world events, for which the United Cricket Board (UCB) and the organisers deserve the highest praise.
