Statement on President Mbeki addressing the Franco-Africa Summit

President Thabo Mbeki is expected to lead discussions, today Thursday 20 February 2003 on "Political Partnership-Peace and Security" during the Franco-Africa Summit scheduled for 20-21 February 2003. The President who is leading the South African delegation that includes the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma, arrived in Paris on Wednesday 19 February 2003.

The Summit, hosted by French President Jacques Chirac, under the theme: Africa and France-together in a new partnership is expected to discuss among other issues French Development Assistance for Africa; strengthening partnerships between Africa and France; the New Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD) and the consolidation of the African Union.

In addition the Summit will look into global efforts aimed at averting war against Iraq. In this regard, South Africa will over the weekend be sending a team of experts to share its experiences and knowledge to assist Iraq to fully and pro-actively respond to its obligations in terms of the UN Security Council Resolution 1441.
