Statement in Response to Media Enquiries
on Death of Sholto Hedenskog
In response to media queries regarding the death of
Sholto Hedenskog, an alleged South African, who was
part of the British marine corp and perished in a helicopter
crash during the current wave of attacks on Iraq, the
Department of Foreign Affairs wishes to put the following
on record:
1. Neither the South African Government nor South African
Diplomatic Missions in the Gulf region and/or London
have been informed of the death of any South African
who may have been part of British armed forces during
the current war against Iraq.
2. The South African Diplomatic Mission in Kuwait has
been in contact with the British Military Liaison Office
to ascertain the nationality of Mr Hedenskog
3. At this stage no official confirmation of Mr Hedenskog's
nationality, as a South African has been received.
4. The Department of Foreign Affairs will remain in
liaison with the British authorities to verify Mr Hedenskog's
nationality.
As Cabinet stated during its last meeting on Wednesday,
19 March 2003, we regret the loss of life of ordinary
Iraqis and others involved in the conflict.
