South African Government Welcomes Decision
by United Nations General Assembly Demanding Israel
Halt Threats to Expel President Arafat
The South African government has noted and welcomes
the passing of a resolution by the United Nations General
Assembly demanding that Israel halt threats to expel
Palestinian President Yasser Arafat.
Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Aziz Pahad said,
"it is significant that the resolution, which addresses
the root causes of the current escalation of violence
between Israelis and Palestinians, was supported almost
unanimously by the international community"
"The greatest threat to resolution of the crisis
between Israel and Palestine can be attributed to efforts
to create divisions within the political leadership
of Palestine.
It is only through a unified leadership that the Palestinians
can address the critical issue of security that is a
primary requirement in terms of the obligations as determined
by the Roadmap.
Constant efforts to divide the Palestinian leadership
will only hinder any potential movement in the Roadmap.
In addition, we call on the Palestinians to halt suicide
bombings since it strengthens those forces determined
to sabotage the peace process," said Deputy Minister
Pahad.
The South African government therefore calls on the
international community to support this clear undertaking
by the United Nations General Assembly to strengthen
efforts to revive the Roadmap.
