President Mbeki to Consult Cabinet on Special Official Funeral for ANC Stalwart

President Thabo Mbeki today, Tuesday May 6, has announced that he will table to Cabinet tomorrow the request that the late ANC stalwart Walter Sisulu be granted a Special Official funeral in view of the enormous contribution he has made to the building of a non-racial and democratic South African state.

President Mbeki made the announcement this afternoon when speaking to members of the press shortly after his visit to the Sisulu home in Johannesburg.

In terms of policy, the President has to consult the Cabinet before declaring a Special Official funeral.
The President indicated that a positive response by the Cabinet would allow for the National flag to be flown at half-mast in the country and in our missions abroad.
