Minister Dlamini Zuma Leads Government
Delegation to the London Solidarity Conference and Holds
Bilateral Discussions with Foreign Secretary Jack Straw,
24 - 26 October 2003
Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Nkosazana Dlamini
Zuma will lead a South African Government delegation
to the London Solidarity Conference scheduled for Friday-Sunday,
24- 26 October 2003, Queen Elizabeth II Conference Centre,
Victoria, London, United Kingdom.
The Conference organised under the theme: Towards a
decade of Freedom: The decade ahead, is organised by
the South African High Commission in London to reconnect
with former members and activists of the British and
European Anti-Apartheid Movements as well as new partners
and friends in the reconstruction and development of
South Africa.
Discussions will focus on the achievements, difficulties,
and strategic choices made during the nearly ten years
of democracy, as well as the challenges that remain
and will be faced in the decade ahead.The Conference
will examine ways and means to mark the tenth anniversary
of democracy in South Africa in 2004, whilst looking
at international solidarity, new partnerships and collaborations
between South Africans, British and Europeans, to push
back the frontiers of poverty and under-development.
Speakers include Minister Dlamini Zuma who will officially
open the Conference, a video message of support by President
Thabo Mbeki; Paul Boateng, Chief Secretary to the Treasury;
Mike Terry, former Executive Secretary of the British
Anti-Apartheid Movement; Hillary Benn, Secretary of
State for International Development.
Other notable contributors include Lord Justice Sedley;
Dick Caborn, Minister for Sports; Frank Dobson, British
MP; Trevor Phillips, Chairperson of the Commission for
Racial Equality.
South African Government Ministers Kader Asmal, Alec
Erwin, Thoko Didiza, Sydney Mufamadi, Dr. Essop Pahad,
Valli Moosa, Pumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, Dr. Manto Tshabalala-Msimang,
Dr. Penuel Maduna, Ronnie Kasrils, and Dr. Ben Ngubane
will lead focused discussions in a number of areas in
the various Conference commissions.
Conference discussions will include a focus on:
· South Africa in Africa and the World
· Urban renewal and rural development
· Activities for 2004 and beyond
· Partnership for progress
A number of key South African corporate, parastatal
and senior government officials, among others Cheryl
Carolus (SA Tourism), Prof. Bernadette Moffat (Women's
Development Bank) Mike Spicer (Anglo-American), Moss
Ngoasheng, Directors-General, Dr. Ayanda Ntsaluba; Thami
Mseleku; CEO of GCIS Joel Netshitenzhe and Deputy Directors-General
Abdul Minty and Ndumiso Ntshinga are expected to attend
the Conference.
Minister Dlamini Zuma is also expected to hold bilateral
discussions with her British counterpart, Jack Straw
on Thursday 23 October 2003 in London.
On Saturday 25 October, Conference delegates will be
treated to a musical feast which will feature South
African artists- Jonas Gwanga, Manhattan Brothers, Lucky
Ranku, Linda Bukhosini, Ntombizodwa Strings Quartet
and a Cape Town based trio of young vocalists.
