Media Advisory: Africa Day Celebration

On 25 May 2004 South Africa will join the rest of the African continent in celebration of Africa Day. Africa Day marks the formation of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) 41 years ago that was later transformed to the African Union (AU).

His Excellency, the Ambassador of Mozambique as Chair of the African Union, will deliver the keynote message on the theme Youth in Sport. The celebration will give special recognition to youth and the role they play in Africa’s development.

To mark this day African leaders will meet in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, the founding city of the OAU, to launch the Peace and Security Council of the African Union. Deputy President Jacob Zuma and Foreign Affairs Minister Dr Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma will represent South Africa.
