President Mbeki Congratulates President Bouteflika on His Re-election as President of Algeria

President Mbeki, today Saturday, 10 April 2004 extended his congratulations to Abdelaziz Bouteflika on his re-election as the President of Algeria.

President Mbeki said, Your Excellency, please accept my congratulations on your re-election as the President of Algeria. As a strong supporter of both the African Union and Africa as new economic policy, your re-election bodes well for the further strengthening of the AU and the consolidation and implementation of NEPAD in your country and region.

In line with the decisions of the AU we are encouraged by the continuously strengthening institutions of democracy throughout the continent.

The role your country plays in international fora like the AU, UN, NAM and the G-77 is greatly appreciated and I wish you well in the consolidation of your efforts for African and global benefit during your next term of office.

The closeness between the people and governments of South Africa and Algeria also finds expression through the South Africa/Algeria Binational Commission of which both you and I chair. Within this framework, links between our two countries have expanded and filtered down to all levels of our societies, including interaction amongst governmet, business, NGOs, academic institutions and ordinary citizens

May I take this opportunity to also convey my best wishes for Your Excellency's personal good health, prosperity for the Democratic Peoples Republic of Algeria and a successful and pleasant term of office, concluded President Mbeki.

Issued by Ronnie Mamoepa on 082 990 4853.
