President Thabo Mbeki to Attend the African Union Summit in Addis Ababa, 6 - 8 July 2004

South African President Thabo Mbeki is expected to depart for Addis Ababa, Ethiopia on Monday, 5 July 2004, to lead the South African delegation to the AU Heads of State and Government from Tuesday, 6 to Thursday, 8 July 2004.

The South African delegation will include - amongst others - the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma.

The Summit was preceded by the Executive Council of Foreign Ministers and the Peace and Security Council, which was chaired by Minister Dlamini Zuma.

From the Peace and Security Council, the Summit will receive recommendations, which will be tabled by President Thabo Mbeki, on developments in Darfur (Sudan), Burundi, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the Ivory Coast; as well as on the implementation of the African Standby Force and Early Warning System of the AU.

The Summit is also expected to receive further recommendations from the Executive Council of Ministers on:

  • The vision and mission of the African Union Commission;
  • The work plan for the Commission until 2007;
  • The proposed AU Non-Aggression Pact;
  • Reports and progress made with regards to NEPAD;
  • Operationalisation and location of the Pan - African
  • Parliament; and
  • Outreach to the African Diaspora.
