President Thabo Mbeki Arrives in Addis
Ababa for the African Union Summit, Tuesday, 6 July

Addis Ababa - South African President Thabo Mbeki,
today, Monday 5 July 2004 arrived in Addis Ababa where
he will lead the South African delegation to the AU
Heads of State and Government Summit scheduled for Tuesday
- Thursday 6 - 8 July 2004 in Ethiopia. The South African
delegation includes the Minister of Foreign Affairs,
Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma and SA's Ambassador to the
AU, Basso Sanqu.
The Summit was preceded by the Executive Council of
Foreign Ministers and the Peace and Security Council,
which was chaired by Minister Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma.
From the Peace and Security Council, the Summit will
receive recommendations, which will be table by President
Mbeki, on developments in Darfur (Sudan); Burundi; the
Democratic Republic of the Congo; and the Ivory Coast
as well as on the implementation of the African Standby
Force and Early Warning system of the AU.
The Summit is also expected to receive further recommendations
from the Executive Council of Ministers on:
- The vision and mission of the African Union Commission
as formulated by the Chairperson of the Commission,
Alpha Omar Konaré;
- The work plan for the Commission until 2007;
- The proposed AU non-Aggression Pact;
- Reports on progress made with regard to NEPAD;
- Operationalisation and location of the Pan-African
Parliament (PAP); and
- Outreach to the African Diaspora.
