President Mbeki to Attend 3rd Extra
Ordinary Summit of the African Union (AU) on Employment
and Poverty Alleviation
President Thabo Mbeki will, on Tuesday, 7 September
2004, depart from South Africa for Ouagadougou, Burkina
Faso where he will attend the 3rd Extraordinary meeting
of the Assembly of the African Union on Employment and
Poverty Alleviation from Wednesday, 8 - Thursday, 9
September 2004.
The President's delegation will include, among others,
Ministers of Labour and Social Development - Membathisi
Mdladlana and Zola Skweyiya respectively.
The Extraordinary Summit will deliberate on strategies
to fight poverty and unemployment in order to improve
the living conditions of the African people.
In this regard, the main theme of the Summit is "Strategies
for Employment Creation/Promotion and Enhancing Sustainable
Livelihoods," while the sub-themes are:
· Ensuring the Effective Implementation and
Follow-up of Summit Decisions
· Resource Mobilisation for Programmes on Employment
Promotion and Poverty Alleviation
· Employment Promotion and Poverty Alleviation
in the Agricultural and Informal Sectors, as well as
in Cultural Industries
· Strategies and Modalities for Employment and
Poverty Alleviation with special emphasis on Vulnerable
and Marginalised Groups.
NEPAD, as the socio-economic programme of the Continent
will constitute the framework for the Summit, and be
used to identify specific measures and actions that
can be pursued towards these objectives, particularly
with regard to resource mobilization and transfer.
