Minister Dlamini Zuma arrives in Brazil for Talks Brazil

Brasilia -South African Foreign Minister, Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma arrived in Brazil, Wednesday 27 October 2004 where she is schedule to hold bilateral political and economic discussion with her Brazilian counterpart, Foreign Minister Celso Amorim, on Thursday and Friday 28-29 October 2004.

Minister Dlamini Zuma who is accompanied by a delegation of senior South African government officials from South Africa's Departments of Foreign Affairs, Defence, Health, Agriculture and Environmental affairs is also expected to co-chair the third session of the South Africa-Brazil Joint Commission.

Brazil remains South Africa's largest trading partner in Latin America.

Minister Dlamini Zuma is expected to hold a t?te-a t?te with Minister Celso Amorim to review progress thus far made in the implementation of the agreements reached between the two countries over the past two year as well as explore new avenues aimed at consolidating and strengthening political and economic relations between the two countries.

During their review the two Ministers are also expected to discuss:

  • Regional developments with regard to Africa and Latin America, with a specific focus on SADC and MERCOSUR
  • The AU and its organs such as the Pan African Parliament, African Peace and Security Council, African Standby Force, Early Warning System and the African Court of Justice
  • The reform of multilateral institutions, including the United Nations - the UN Security Council, United Nation's General Assembly, ECOSOC and Global Finance Institutions
  • Ways and means of consolidating the historic trilateral forum between India-Brazil-South Africa (IBSA) pushing back the frontiers of poverty and underdevelopment and the
  • Global effort to uproot the scourge of terrorism.

In addition, developments in bilateral relations, particularly in the areas of trade, transport, health, social services, minerals and energy and tourism will come up for review during discussions between the senior South African government officials delegation and their Brazilian counterparts.

Whilst in Brazil Minister Dlamini Zuma will also have the opportunity to address senior South African envoys based in the Latin American region to brief them on national, continental and global developments.
